It’s not every day you discover that your mother is a serial killer. This was the reality for TikToker Jay Carson (@jaycarson200) as a teenager. Jay’s mother was named Vickie Dawn Jackson, and she was a serial killer known as the Angel of Death in Texas.
In late 2000 or early 2001, it was discovered that an unusually high number of people were dying at Nocona General Hospital, where Jay’s mother worked as a nurse. She worked about five days a week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
When investigators looked into the situation, they realized that the deaths were all occurring between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on days that Jay’s mother was at work.
They also found out that high doses of a drug called mivacurium chloride were missing.
“From my understanding, at that point in time, there were only certain people in the hospital who had access to that particular medication, and my mother was one of them,” said Jay.
“Mivacurium chloride is a relaxant, a paralytic of sorts. It is used to paralyze the muscles, to basically relax the muscles during certain procedures, specifically to aid medical stuff.”
The drug is administered to make it easier for a tube to be inserted into a patient’s throat. The tube will then help the patient breathe. However, if the tube is not inserted after the medication is administered, the patient won’t be able to breathe.
This was the way in which many people at the hospital were dying. They were essentially suffocating to death. Between December 2000 and February 2001, roughly 30 to 40 deaths occurred.
On July 16, 2002, Vickie was arrested at a bakery in a local grocery store in Bowie, Texas, where she worked. Jay was 15 years old and had been left with one of their mother’s friends while she was at work.
“My mother called me from the police station to let me know what had happened and that she had already gotten in contact with my father to arrange for him to come and pick me up,” said Jay.
“It was absolute chaos. I remember being angry because, at that point in time, all the way up until 15, as far back as I can remember, I was very protective of my mother. More specifically, I was very trauma-bonded to my mother, so whatever happened to her was happening to me.”
The next day, Vickie was indicted and charged with four counts of murder. News outlets began reaching out to Jay and their father.
There was a brief period when Jay couldn’t go anywhere or do anything without someone recognizing them in their small town. Jay was also still in high school and often experienced being pulled out of class to talk to any law enforcement that might show up.
To this day, Vickie is still at the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville, Texas, which is the largest prison for women in the entire state.
