Scott Galloway predicted Monday that OpenAI will replace Sam Altman as CEO within six months, telling Prof G Markets listeners the embattled AI giant needs “an adult in the room.”

“Sam Altman is on the green mile,” the New York University professor said. “He’s an innovator, not an operator.”

• Microsoft stock is showing downward pressure. Where is MSFT stock headed?

Galloway Sees a Sierra Acquisition Coming

Galloway’s specific call is that OpenAI acquires enterprise AI firm Sierra and installs co-founder Bret Taylor as chief executive, with the two swapping roles.

Taylor already chairs OpenAI’s board, meaning Galloway is predicting he buys his own startup and swaps seats with the CEO, a deal that would likely raise conflict-of-interest questions.

In 2022, Taylor chaired Twitter’s board when it forced a reluctant Elon Musk to complete his $44 billion buyout. Galloway joked that Taylor “shoplifted $44 billion” from Musk without ever provoking a public attack, evidence of the steady hand OpenAI needs.

OpenAI’s Second ‘Week From Hell’

The prediction caps a bruising stretch. Apple Inc. AAPL reportedly sued OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft, calling the startup “rotten to its core,” Applications President Fiji Simo announced her departure and the company shut down its Atlas browser.

Competition is biting too. ChatGPT’s market share has reportedly fallen from 76% to 50% in a year, squeezed by Gemini, Claude and a wave of less expensive Chinese models.

The latest is Moonshot’s Kimi K3, released Friday, which reportedly topped a closely watched coding leaderboard and rattled chip stocks including NVIDIA Corp. NVDA.

DeepSeek, meanwhile, prices output at 87 cents per million tokens versus $45 for OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, per figures cited on Galloway’s podcast.

Taylor pushed back on the cheap-token narrative Monday on CNBC, arguing frontier models are far more “token efficient,” so they may complete tasks at lower real cost despite higher headline prices.

Why the Math May Worry Microsoft

Co-host Ed Elson modeled a worst-case scenario in which OpenAI’s hardware business dies, ad revenue misses by 90% and model prices fall 80%. Under those assumptions, OpenAI could be losing $165 billion a year by 2030.

That would be a problem for Microsoft Corp. MSFT, OpenAI’s largest backer, and Oracle Corp. ORCL, whose debt S&P recently downgraded, citing OpenAI as a key credit risk.

Traders on Polymarket think there is an 86% chance Anthropic, OpenAI’s main rival, will IPO before OpenAI. A separate market only gives OpenAI a 10% chance of having the best model at the end of the year.

Galloway acknowledged his call is bold, giving himself six months, maybe 12, to be proven right.
