A couple known for their protests of President Trump at a Tulsa intersection were arrested Sunday in Sand Springs after a confrontation with a delivery driver that police say led to an assault with a vehicle.
Monica and Jason Ponnequin face charges for assault after the incident Sunday morning at the QuikTrip on Highway 97 at Wekiwa Road. Police say an officer was there when Jason Ponnequin intentionally rammed his Chevy Tahoe into a car driven by a man who confronted the Ponnequins over their protest signs. Sand Springs Police say video from the store shows the entire incident, which was also described by several eyewitnesses.
Sand Springs Deputy Police Chief Todd Enzbrenner said a delivery driver confronted the Ponnequins, who admitted throwing something at the driver, who then backed up and hit Jason Ponnequin, knocking him to the ground. Ponnequin, according to police reports, then got into his SUV and circled the store, hitting the other car intentionally to stop it. That victim was unhurt, but a passenger was injured and taken to a hospital. Police say Monica Ponnequin advanced on the other car initially, and claimed the driver spit at her.
The police report indicates both of the Ponnequins were verbally abusive and hostile to the officer making the report. Jason Ponnequin was injured from the vehicle impact and hospitalized, but will be arrested after he is released, according to Enzbrenner.
The officer reviewed QT security video and reported it shows Monica advancing toward the victim and Jason throwing a 3 x 5 white board at the vehicle as the driver attempts to leave, then shows Ponnequin steering into the path of the fleeing victim's car. Police said in searching the Ponnequins and their vehicle, two debit cards from other people were found, along with a legal "kinetic launcher" weapon that resembles a handgun and fires pepper balls.
