Samsung takes on Apple Card with its first US credit card

5% cash rewards on direct Samsung purchases

After months of rumors, Samsung has finally announced its first credit card for the US: the Samsung Galaxy Card. Issued by Barclays on the Visa network, the card offers 5% cash rewards on Samsung direct purchases, taking a page from Apple Card’s playbook.

Samsung already offers a credit card, the Samsung Card, in its home country of South Korea. But the Galaxy Card is the company's first credit card in the US. It offers similar perks to the Apple Card, which the Cupertino giant launched back in 2019.

This includes 5% cash back on Samsung devices purchased directly from the company, in-store or through its online store, including the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Watch family. You will also get a 3% cash reward on transactions made through Samsung Wallet. And if you use the card to pay for your online subscriptions, like Disney+ or Netflix, you will get 2% cash rewards. Lastly, there's a 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Like Apple Card, the Samsung Galaxy Card offers deep integration with Samsung Wallet. Once approved, it will be instantly provisioned to Samsung Wallet, so you can start using it right away.

If you are a heavy Samsung Wallet user, the Galaxy Card will only make things better.

Unlike Apple's offering, though, the Galaxy Card won't be made of titanium. Instead, it will come in a black metal finish. Samsung also does not offer any high-yield savings account with the card.

Get an extra $200 in cash rewards

There is no annual fee, with Samsung offering a bonus for qualifying customers right now. They will get an extra $200 in cash rewards if they spend $2,000 within 90 days of getting the card. The card will also make them eligible for a 20% discount on Samsung's VIP Advantage membership.

The public can apply for the Samsung Galaxy Card in the US starting July 22, though some lucky customers can apply starting today. It goes without saying that you must have a decent credit score for your application to go through.

If you are heavily invested in Samsung's ecosystem, the Galaxy Card can be an appealing option for the additional 5% cash reward it promises. Even the 3% cash reward on other purchases is decent, though there are credit cards with higher rewards.
