The Houston Astros have traded right-handed pitcher Nate Pearson to the Kansas City Royals. Pearson is a former first-round pick and starter from the Toronto Blue Jays and is sporting a 1-0 record with a 3.60 ERA, 16 strikeouts and a 1.40 WHIP with the Astros this season.
In return, the Astros are acquiring pitching prospect Max Martin from the Royals. The right-handed minor league reliever has sported a 6-2 record with a 2.01 ERA across 26 appearances.
Pearson used to be a starting pitcher but transitioned to the bullpen in 2023 following injuries and command issues. The 29-year-old was designated for assignment on Sunday by the Astros.
The Royals have acquired Pearson to strengthen their bullpen, which is the second-worst in all of MLB with a 5.39 ERA. His 4.10 FIP and 19 percent strikeout rate make him a solid addition to the Royals bullpen.

The Royals acquiring Pearson not only enhances their bullpen depth, but it also provides them with a cost-effective and controllable veteran. Pearson is under team control through the 2027 season, which offers the Royals a long-term reliever who is low risk. Pearson's upside is that he is a hard-throwing reliever who can help the Royals make a push for the postseason despite their struggles.
As a full-time reliever, Pearson owns a fastball that averages 97.7 mph, and this season he found success with the Astros and pitched 20 innings with 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
He started this season on the injured list and made his season debut on May 20. Across 16 relief appearances with the Astros, he recorded one save. Despite his solid efforts, he was a salary cut and moved to make roster space.
Since his tenure with the Blue Jays, he has yet to settle in long-term with a team, and here's to hoping that he's found his home with the Royals. His 41.8 percent ground-ball rate this season is the highest of his career, and he's only allowed one home run across 16 games.
