A man has been applauded for refusing to leave his apartment while his roommate’s boyfriend is visiting—as well as her demand that he pay for the Airbnb she eventually booked for the couple.
The 36-year-old original poster (OP), Reddit user Kind_of_Bear, explained that he has been living with his 32-year-old female roommate for four years to save on costs.
While he has the biggest bedroom—which doubles as his office as he works fully from home—and they split costs equally, it hasn’t been an issue so far, as they agreed to let her have sole use of the living room.
However, his roommate’s underlying resentment came to the surface after she announced her long-distance boyfriend would be visiting for the first time for 10 days in July.
The OP emphasized that this wasn’t a problem for him, as his own girlfriend stays over several times a month—but then his roommate began asking repeatedly if he would be taking a “vacation” in July, to give them privacy.
“I answered truthfully that I had been on vacation in June and had trips planned for August and September, so I wasn’t planning on leaving the house in July,” he wrote.
She kept bringing it up, however, not taking his no for an answer—until, finally, she declared that she had had to book an Airbnb for 10 days, and expected him to pay as he had left her with “no choice.”
‘A classless person’
When he refused, she brought up other arguments—that his girlfriend should pay rent as she stayed over a few nights a month, and that he should pay more because he had a bigger bedroom.
Then, when none of that worked, she said “she thought ‘we were friends‘ and that it wouldn’t be a problem for me to do her a ‘small’ favor,” he wrote.
“She said she was wrong about me and that I turned out to be a classless person.”
So, having refused to take a hit on his finances to take a vacation he couldn’t afford, or to pay for his roommate to get an Airbnb with her partner for the 10 days, he asked the internet to judge his actions.
And netizens were quick to weigh in.
Reddit Reacts
Hundreds of Reddit users flocked to the comments to weigh in, with one summing it up simply: “Her boyfriend can chip in for the Airbnb if she insists on getting one. The only person making her get one is her.”
“She isn’t expected to leave the apartment when your girlfriend visits, so why should you leave when she’s hosting?” another pointed out.
A third dubbed his roommate an “entitled fruit loop.”
Meanwhile, one commenter suggested that this issue was entirely hers: “If she expected you out of the apartment during his visit, she should have included you in the planning,” they wrote.
“You will be on vacation in August, so his visit could have been planned for then.”
