As most ordinary viewers are sure to tell you, What About Bob? remains a certified classic of '90s comedy, featuring two of the entertainment industry's most beloved comedic actors.
While Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray might have delivered comedy gold with their energetic chemistry in the film, things were more than a little tense between the two stars behind the scenes.
In a 2009 interview with The AV Club, Dreyfuss reflected on his experiences working with Murray, confessing that he outright "didn't like" the SNL alum during their time on the film.
"Funny movie. Terribly unpleasant experience," Dreyfuss admitted. "We didn’t get along, me and Bill Murray. But I’ve got to give it to him: I don’t like him, but he makes me laugh even now. I’m also jealous that he’s a better golfer than I am. It’s a funny movie. No one ever comes up to you and says, 'I identify with the patient.' They always say, 'I have patients like that. I identify with your character.' No one ever says that they’re willing to identify with the other character."
Elsewhere, Cracked.com mentioned a similar story that saw the Jaws star recount a particularly acrimonious dinner with Murray. "Bill just got drunk at dinner,” Dreyfuss alleged. “He came back from dinner one night, and I said, ‘Read this script tweak, I think it’s really funny.'”
“He put his face next to me,” Dreyfuss continued. “Nose-to-nose. And he screamed at the top of his lungs, ‘Everyone hates you! You are tolerated!'”
“There was no time to react because he leaned back and took a modern glass-blown ashtray," the Close Encounters actor continued. "He threw it at my face from only a couple of feet away. And it weighed about three-quarters of a pound."
As Cracked pointed out, Murray shrugged off the rumors surrounding his prickly relationship with Dreyfuss years later in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It worked for the movie. I mean, I drove him nuts, and he encouraged me to drive him nuts.”
