WASHINGTON — The powerful House Oversight Committee is threatening to subpoena Alan Dershowitz — once a criminal-defense lawyer for sex fiend Jeffrey Epstein — after the attorney abruptly canceled an upcoming interview.
Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) seethed in a Tuesday letter to Dershowitz that he was attempting to “hide from this Committee’s investigation” into the powerful late pedophile, including of his potential government connections — despite having said he had “nothing to hide” and that he could share relevant details at the scheduled July 20 sit-down.
“The Committee will not tolerate any further delay,” Comer fumed. “Accordingly, we reiterate our request that you testify at an in-person, videotaped transcribed interview on September 2, 2026.
“If you fail to adhere to this request, the Committee will explore all available tools at its disposal, including the use of the compulsory process,” the GOP chairman added.
Dershowitz told The Post that he just “couldn’t go” to his scheduled interview — for good reason.
“There was a legal development that occurred that precluded me from testifying,” he said.

“We’re trying to eliminate that barrier now,” Dershowitz said. “It’s out of my hands. It’s completely out of my control.”
Dershowitz has repeatedly claimed he has “nothing to hide” about the vigorous criminal defense he previously provided Epstein in the 2000s when the financier was under state and federal investigation for the alleged sex-trafficking of women and girls in Palm Beach, Fla.
Dershowitz’s counsel, Imran Ansari, declined to comment to The Post.
The Republican-led Oversight Committee has interviewed more than a dozen Epstein associates as it probes what Comer described as “the alleged mismanagement of the federal government’s investigation” into the sicko dead millionaire and his convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
Epstein, 66, died in Manhattan prison Aug. 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. He had registered as a sex offender and served 13 months in state prison after pleading guilty to soliciting sex from a minor in Florida in 2008.
That guilty plea was a result of a 2007 federal non-prosecution agreement that let Epstein serve time mostly on work release while incarcerated in Palm Beach County.
“Ultimately, the trial was a crapshoot, and we just wanted the guy to go to jail,” former US Attorney Alex Acosta, who oversaw the case, told members of the Oversight panel in a September 2025 interview.
A 2020 DOJ Office of Professional Responsibility report on the notorious case noted that Epstein allegedly molested as many as 40 victims, some of whom were as young as 14 years old, but Acosta in the interview said the Palm Beach State Attorney’s Office was only able to get one to testify before a Florida grand jury.
Acosta added that Epstein’s criminal defense team — which included Dershowitz — skirted the line of “misconduct” in their handling of the case, including by targeting family members of at least one of the US Attorney’s Office’s prosecutors.
“Everyone’s entitled to an aggressive defense,” he told the Oversight Committee. “But it was distasteful. It did frustrate our attorneys.”
Epstein also reportedly hired private investigators to intimidate some of his accusers.
Dershowitz told The Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast in May that Epstein had dirt on “only one person” — whom the lawyer refused to name but insisted it wasn’t a politician. He added that Epstein did not have intelligence ties to the CIA or Mossad and that “many of his crimes are exaggerated.”
“I don’t think he was blackmailing people, though I think he was interested in collecting information about people, and maybe he would have used it to defend himself, but I don’t think he ever affirmatively blackmailed people,” Dershowitz said at the time.
The legal eagle’s views of his former client align with the Department of Justice’s assessment last year that Epstein kept no “client list” of influential associates who were implicated in his sickening sex crimes — and that the deceased money manager for wealthy individuals committed suicide.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates told the Oversight Committee in a June interview with lawmakers that Epstein tried to use his extramarital affairs with Russian women as “leverage” against him — but stopped short of successfully blackmailing the philanthropist for money.
