A Perry County school district has received more than $900,000 in grant money for solar panels.
The Department of Community and Economic Development announced on Tuesday that the Commonwealth Financing Authority has approved grant money through the Solar for Schools Grant Program to help several Pennsylvania schools purchase and install solar panels, including permit fees, energy storage and utility interconnection.
“Solar for Schools is a win-win. It reduces costs for school districts on their energy bills and reduces air pollution from electricity generation,” DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley, said in a news release. “These solar panels will generate electricity and give a visible way for students to see how the electricity that powers their school is made without air pollution.”
Newport School District received two Solar for Schools grants: $480K for Newport High School and $480K for Newport Elementary School. The state said the solar panels will provide an annual savings of more than $180,000 for the schools.
The Wyomissing Area School District in Berks County received $720,000 in grant money for two schools, and the Norristown Area School District in Montgomery County received $960,000 for two schools.
The Solar for Schools Grant Program was established in 2024.
