The New England Patriots announced several roster moves on Wednesday, including the release of fullback Brock Lampe and the signings of tight end Mitch Van Vooren and linebacker Riley Wilson.
Lampe came in as a highly-touted undrafted free agent last season. However, his rookie year was cut short after he was placed on injured reserve early during training camp. The timing hurt more than anything given the Patriots' lack of a legitimate fullback on their roster.
If Lampe remained healthy, there's a good chance he would have contributed on the field, and the team wouldn't have had to turn tight end Jack Westover into a fullback.
With the Patriots signing Reggie Gilliam, who is one of the best fullbacks in the NFL, it was always going to be an uphill battle for Lampe.
Van Vooren will add more depth at tight end behind Hunter Henry and Eli Raridon. It's a thin position that should have legitimate competition for the No. 3 role. Vooren is an undrafted second-year player who was picked up by the Seattle Seahawks last season. He hauled in 33 catches for 510 yards and 10 touchdowns in his final college season at St. Norbert.
Meanwhile, Wilson is a rookie defender coming off a 2025 college season at Arizona, where he registered 51 tackles, three sacks, eight tackles for a loss, two interceptions and four passes defended.
