Paige has been candid about the emotional reality of her time in AEW, telling The Nikki & Brie Show that despite enjoying her run with the company and leaving on excellent terms, her heart was simply not in it the way it has always been with WWE.
“Well, I did go to AEW and you guys, I did have a great time there but my heart wasn’t in it, and I feel like you could see that in my performance when I was in the ring there and my character and it was just like, I’m a WWE girl,” Paige said. “I love WWE, and so yeah, I went there for a couple of years and we went our separate ways and it ended really, really great and I have nothing but love when it comes to AEW and Tony Khan and stuff like that but yeah, when it comes to WWE, that’s just where I’ve wanted to be forever.”
The honesty in that assessment is notable. Paige did not dismiss her AEW run or speak negatively about the promotion — she credited the company, praised Tony Khan, and described the parting as positive on both sides. But she drew a clear distinction between going through the professional motions in a place that did not feel like home and competing for the company that has always represented the pinnacle of the business to her personally.
That distinction showed up in her work, by her own admission. Paige suggested fans could see the difference in her performances and character during the AEW period, an unusually self-critical observation from someone who won the AEW Women’s World Championship during that stretch. She captured the title in her home country of England at Wembley Stadium and yet she frames even that achievement as part of a chapter that never quite felt right.
Paige returned to WWE at WrestleMania 42, stepping in as Brie Bella’s partner after Nikki Bella suffered an ankle injury. The two won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships that night.
