Paige Spiranac returned to the Barstool Sports golf world on Wednesday.
The former professional golfer turned social media star appeared in a YouTube golf video with Foreplay, Barstool's golf brand. Spiranac competed against Foreplay's three founding members in a 3-on-1 challenge.
Spiranac last worked with Barstool in The Internet Invitational, which was co-hosted by Barstool Sports and Bob Does Sports. Spiranac's team made it to the final round, playing for $1 million, before ultimately losing.
Spiranac had a tough showing in the final round. She taunted one of her opponents, Francis Ellis, for not knowing common golf etiquette because he "hasn't played competitive golf" before. She was later accused of cheating, as she stomped around in tall grass - very similar to Bryson DeChambeau at the British Open - and violated the rules. When confronted about the rules violation, Spiranac started to cry.
The social media star had to take a break from the internet following the tournament. She said she received death threats, too.
"The last week and a half is probably the worst hate I’ve ever received in the 10 years of me doing this," Spiranac said on her Instagram story. "I’m talking tens of thousands of death threats, people telling me to kill myself. The most vile, horrendous stuff you could ever say to an individual that’s been in my DMs to the point where we were discussing me having to potentially get a restraining order. I mean, it’s serious stuff. It’s not easy, and it hasn’t been easy."
Spiranac addressed the backlash with Foreplay on Wednesday
Spiranac admitted to regretting some of her behavior in The Internet Invitational while speaking to Foreplay on Wednesday.
Specifically, Spiranac said her "biggest regret" is what she told Francis Ellis, teasing him about "not playing competitive golf" early in the final round.
The golf influencer said that she regretted saying it the moment it came out of her mouth. Spiranac and Ellis are on good terms now, though. Ellis has actually reached out to Spiranac and encouraged her to return to this year's event.
Spiranac will be back in The Internet Invitational this year, competing for a prize pool that could approach $4 million.
