PHOENIX, Ariz. — A 14-year-old Arizona boy is being recognized for stepping in to help a woman with dementia who was found wandering several miles away from her home during a dangerous stretch of extreme heat, WHIO TV reported. Officials said the teenager’s quick thinking may have helped protect the woman from potentially life-threatening conditions as temperatures climbed above 100 degrees.
The teenager encountered the woman confused and alone in the heat and moved her to a shaded location to help shield her from the intense sun, ABC 15 reported. The boy stayed with her until she was able to provide information that helped reconnect her with her family.
While resting in the shade, the woman was able to remember her son’s phone number. The teenager used that information to contact her family, allowing her son, Jeff Morgan, to learn that she had been found and was safe.
Morgan said he was extremely grateful that the teenager stopped to help rather than simply passing by. He praised the boy for showing compassion and taking responsibility during a frightening situation.
“Just so lucky, so fortunate that he ran across her and he cared enough to stay with her and to take care of her,” Morgan said.
The teenager’s actions have drawn praise from the community, with local emergency officials recognizing the importance of his response. The local fire department and the Air National Guard are expected to honor him for helping protect the woman during the dangerous heat.
