Florida coach Jon Sumrall won over plenty of fans with his fiery performance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. But at least one of his newer followers might be a little more difficult to please: Nick Saban.
The long-time Alabama coach who consistently won national titles — and whose run some might argue ended Florida’s golden years a decade and a half ago — was on the set of SEC Now with Sumrall on Wednesday afternoon. And he made a few things perfectly clear.
“Let me just say one thing to you, Jon,” Saban began. “I’m a Florida resident now and down there amongst the Gators. And Governor (Ron) DeSantis is a good friend. You took our former president Stuart Bell, who’s now a Gator. And I want you to know, I’m kind of a semi-Gator.
“So if you don’t get your sh*t together, I’m going to be in the middle of it. I just want you to know that.”
Jon Sumrall and the rest of the panel had a good laugh, but Nick Saban seemed serious enough about it. At the very least, it’s clear he’ll be watching Florida intently thanks to his new proximity.
The two had a jovial interaction on the set, though, in part because they shared something in common on Wednesday. Both used the word “sh*t” live on television.

In speaking about his team last year and the challenge of facing SEC opponents on a more regular basis this year, Jon Sumrall noted his Tulane team faced Ole Miss twice last year. Neither time went well, as Sumrall pointed out in a very colorful manner.
“Look, we played them the first time at Tulane,” Sumrall said. “They beat the sh*t out of us. We played them the second time, with a different head coach. They still beat the sh*t out of us.”
That apparently didn’t sit well with everyone. But Nick Saban might have provided Jon Sumrall with a bit of an out in his segment on the SEC Now set.
“I probably have 19 text messages from my mom, so my response back a few minutes ago: ‘If it’s good enough for Nick Saban, it should be good enough for mom,'” Sumrall said with a laugh. “Coach, I appreciate the assist there.”
