A backyard plum tree with a long family history has become the center of an online debate after a homeowner decided to end a tradition that began decades before they moved in.
The owner who goes by user NoBad1026 on Reddit said they initially agreed to let the previous owner collect plums from the tree because it had been planted by her late mother, but now believes that generosity has been taken too far.
“They picked nearly every ripe plum, including branches hanging over my patio, and left a bunch of broken twigs and fruit on the ground,” they wrote, adding: “I barely got any myself.”
According to the post, the previous owner and her husband had been turning the plums into homemade jam for almost two decades and appeared keen to carry on the tradition despite no longer owning the property.
A Request for Another Harvest
The July 14 Reddit post quickly went viral, earning 13,000 upvotes. It details how the former owner recently contacted the user again and asked which weekend she could come back for this year’s harvest.
“I told her I planned on keeping the fruit this time since the tree is on my property and I actually want to make something with it,” they wrote.
The woman was reportedly unhappy with the response, arguing that the homeowner knew the tree had special significance to her family. She also offered a few jars of homemade jam in exchange.
They said: “I spent a lot of money from Ѕtake fixing up this yard and I don’t want people treating part of it like it still belongs to them.”
However, their sister thinks they should let her take a bucket of fruit because it’s their family tradition.
The post concludes: “I feel bad about the connection to her mom, but I also don’t think buying a house means the old owners get yearly access to whatever they miss.”
Reddit Weighs In
The post has received 3,000 comments – many of which are siding with the current owner.
“If she had just picked a few off the tree it would have been better. She picked them all. Your tree, your fruit,” one commenter wrote.
Another user agreed: “Just be honest about it. They were disrespectful – they harvested the whole tree like it was theirs. How rude! Also it’s time for them to let the tree go. She had a year to get over it. If she chose not to take cuttings, that’s on her. Time to move on.
A third said: “She has some nerve. If there is a lot of fruit, you can give her a basket. But, really, you should just end it now.”
