Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) defended her amendment to the fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, arguing that “chopping off body parts does not make a better soldier,” and saying the U.S. military should focus on producing “the toughest warfighters in the world.”
“We want the toughest warfighters in the world, not a military gutted by gender delusion. Chopping off body parts does not make a better soldier. It destroys military readiness. Our colleagues on the left seem to disagree,” Mace said in a post on X.
The NDAA is updated annually through a multi-step legislative cycle involving committee markups, floor amendments, and a House-Senate conference.
Since it's considered a critical "must-pass" bill for military funding, lawmakers frequently attach hundreds of policy and budget amendments to it each year, with seven subcommittees focusing on information technologies, intelligence and special operations, military personnel, readiness, seapower and projection forces, strategic forces, and tactical and land forces.
Mace filed her amendment to the NDAA last fall in support of President Donald Trump’s executive order titled "Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth."
“This amendment reinforces President Trump’s leadership in restoring common sense across the federal government," Mace's amendment said. "In the President’s executive order, President Trump made clear taxpayer resources must not be wasted on gender ideology. Rep. Mace’s amendment applies the same standard to the Department of War, ensuring defense dollars go to strengthening our military, not funding gender-transition procedures.”

Mace’s amendment builds on previous legislation she introduced as part of her broader push against gender ideology.
“Our NDAA amendment would ensure defense dollars are spent on defending our country, not funding the chemical and surgical mutilation of our troops,” Mace said.
