A mom of two in Sydney has died after sustaining severe burns in a backyard grilling accident.
Charlotte Rose-Anne Hill was setting up a grill so her son Noah, 11, and daughter Billie-Rose, 7, could roast marshmallows on their winter break from school, but she suddenly caught fire herself, News.com.au reported.
Her daughter screamed “the loudest she has ever screamed in her life” to alert their father, Matt Tierney, while her son used his jacket in an attempt to put the fire out, Charlotte’s cousin Bianca Hill told the outlet.
Matt provided first aid and took the mom of two, who sustained serious burns to her face and hands, to the hospital.
Bianca then arrived and helped transfer Charlotte to another hospital that was better equipped to treat her injuries while the children stayed with their father.
“I actually jumped in the ambulance with her and she was in so much agony,” Bianca told News.com.au. “Watching someone that you love suffer like that… it seriously broke me.”
Charlotte responded well to surgery and she initially seemed to be doing well, even speaking to her kids on the phone, according to the outlet. The family had hoped that she would recover, Bianca wrote in a GoFundMe post.
But later, medical staff found her unresponsive due to a medical complication, and Charlotte died on Friday, July 10.
“I received the worst phone call you can get,” Bianca told News.com.au. “We’ll never hear her laugh again. We’re just so heartbroken for her children.”
Bianca paid tribute to her “generous and very kind” cousin, who she said had a “beautiful smile” and the “biggest heart.”
She told News.com.au, “She’d do anything to make her kids’ day. She would literally do anything at all just to make sure they have a happy childhood,” and explained that Charlotte witnessed her own mother’s death when she was younger.
“She just never ever wanted her children to have to go through the same traumatic pain that loss brought her,” she explained.
Charlotte’s brother, Max Hill, also paid tribute to his sister in a Facebook post. “From when I was a little kid to a teen, through to my journey as a father, we always had a good laugh and you always looked out for me,” he wrote.

Bianca set up the GoFundMe fundraiser in the hope of raising money for Charlotte’s funeral and to support her children.
“While no amount of money can ever replace Charlotte’s love, warmth, or guidance, we hope this fundraiser can provide her children with the security and support she would have wanted for them,” she wrote.
