Mom, 20, fatally shot while sleeping in bed with her 1-year-old daughter

A 20-year-old mother was fatally shot when a bullet entered her bedroom through a window while she was sleeping alongside her 1-year-old daughter.

Maria Barrios Ventura was asleep in her bedroom in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 19, when she was struck by a bullet around 3:35 a.m., according to CBS News.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has since identified Ventura as the victim in an online report.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department discovered Ventura with bullet wounds when they responded to the home after the incident, according to NBC Los Angeles. Police sources told the outlet that she had been struck in the head.

Paramedics also responded to the scene to help, but Ventura was ultimately pronounced dead.

Following her killing, Ventura's boyfriend, Omar Misael, told NBC Los Angeles that she was a mother to a little girl. Misael added that he, Ventura and the baby were sleeping together in the same bed when she was shot.

"A stray bullet passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here. She died about 10 minutes later," Misael said.

Authorities are now investigating whether the incident was targeted or a random attack.

A man named Jose Chavez also said his property was hit by the gunshots, according to NBC Los Angeles.

"It hit my car, it hit the window, it hit a friend," he claimed. "And unfortunately, she died."

Ventura's aunt Liliana Lopez has since set up a GoFundMe page to help her family financially during the difficult time.

Lopez called Ventura's death a "sudden and heartbreaking event" that has "left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss. She was a loving mother, and her absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her."

"The funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward funeral expenses, send her back to her family in Guatemala and to support her 1-year-old daughter, who now faces an uncertain future without her mother," she wrote.

Lopez added that all of Ventura's family lives in Guatemala, so "there is little local support available, and we are doing everything we can to provide for her daughter's needs during this difficult time."

"We currently don't have anything for her daughter, and any contribution - no matter how small - would mean the world to us. Your support will help ensure that her daughter receives the care and stability she needs," Lopez said.

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Us that they currently don't have any suspects for the shooting as of time of publication.
