The University of Michigan is about to undergo another shakeup within its athletics department.
A little over seven months after the school fired head football coach Sherrone Moore for having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member — a scandal that rocked the college football world and left to he hiring of Kyle Whittingham as the new football coach — Michigan announced it will be ushering in a new athletic director too.
Warde Manuel, who’s been the Wolverines’ AD since 2016 and has overseen national championship titles for both football and men’s basketball, will be stepping away from his role at the end of the year following the school’s internal investigation into the Moore incident.
Michigan did not confirm Warde’s departure was because of the Moore scandal, but most fans are already connecting those dots.
“I am very proud of all the successes and accomplishments of our athletic department over the past 11 years,” Manuel said in a statement. “We have tremendous coaches and professionals who support our outstanding student athletes every day.
“I am happy President Grasso asked me to stay on to work with him to implement the recommendations for continuous improvement. I promise everyone I will have more to say about my decision at the appropriate time. Forever, Go Blue.”
Though the school only released part of its findings from the investigation — the full findings will be released soon, per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports — it did reveal there was no evidence of blatant widespread misconduct within the Michigan department of athletics.
“Neither the investigation nor the culture review found that misconduct was widespread throughout the department,” the school stated. “The culture review found that weaknesses in accountability, organizational structure, oversight, and reporting created conditions in which misconduct was not always addressed consistently, promptly, or in accordance with University expectations.”
