Trading for an impact point guard is starting to look unlikely for the Miami Heat. That is why they have been linked to a trio of journeymen still available in free agency, including former Miami standout Gabe Vincent.
There is no doubt that the Heat are a better team following their blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Bucks icon Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, in making the trade, Miami has a serious depth problem. As of now, their starting lineup will be Bam Adebayo, Antetokounmpo, Andrew Wiggins, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Davion Mitchell. Furthermore, their bench is pretty weak after Bobby Portis.
Miami needs to bolster its roster, especially at point guard. However, according to Heavy’s Sean Deveney, while trades for veterans like Dennis Schroder and Tre Mann would offer a big boost, the Heat probably don’t have the trade chips to make a deal after acquiring the 10-time All-Star in June. It’s why he offered up three potential options still on the free agent market.
Which veteran point guard should the Miami Heat sign?
Signing either Williams, Anthony, or Vincent is unlikely to excite Heat fans. However, all three offer something to consider when trying to decide which is the best fit.
Williams had the best season of the three in 2025-26 as he posted a career-high 13 points and four assists a night in 66 games for the Dallas Mavericks. He is also only 26, so he could be on an upward swing in his career. However, that may also make him a bit more costly. Plus, Miami needs three-point shooting, and Williams hit on just 23% of his attempts behind the arc last season.
Anthony has continued to head in the wrong direction over the last few years. Tallying a career-worst 6.7 a game in just over 15 minutes a night for the Bucks. He is also just an average shooter from three. However, he did play with Antetokounmpo a bit last year. So maybe that familiarity would be helpful when trying to make the new pieces of the roster gel faster.
Vincent had another disappointing year for the Los Angeles Lakers last season. After being a key part of Miami reaching the NBA Finals in 2023, his career has completely unraveled. He would be the least appealing option for most teams. However, his previous history with the Heat and head coach Erik Spoelstra might make him the best option.
There is no doubt Vincent excelled under the coach. With him still being in his prime years, he could easily get back to that impact play. Furthermore, he might take a very cheap deal to get the chance to play in a better situation after some rough seasons.
