When it comes to classic British detectives, one of the first that comes to mind is Sherlock Holmes. Plenty of legendary writers and directors have taken a stab at adapting Sherlock Holmes over the years, and there will certainly be more to come. More underrated detectives like John Luther (played by Idris Elba) have also become popular in recent years, but another iconic detective who has been adapted into movies and TV several times is Jules Maigret. There are more than 50 Maigret novels and short stories by author Georges Simenon for Maigret adaptations to pull from, and while the 2016 adaptation of the material focused on an older detective (played by Rowan Atkinson), the latest adaptation taking the world by storm changes everything we learned about Maigret from the past series.
The first season of the new Maigret show premiered last year in November, and it was announced back in April that the series had been picked up for Season 2. Details about Season 2 have been sparse since the announcement, until this afternoon, when Masterpiece PBS shared the first-look image from Maigret Season 2, also confirming that the show will return on October 18. While this new version of Maigret is still inspired by the writings of Georges Simenon, it was written and created for TV by Patrick Harbinson, who previously worked on other shows like Homeland and 24. The 2025 Maigret series, which is set in Paris, shows Maigret in the early days of his career, still eager to prove himself alongside his squad of young detectives. Maigret may not have the massive cinematic events like adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and other famous detectives, but his methodical process makes him one of the more entertaining detectives to watch.
What Is ‘Maigret’ Season 2 About?
PBS Masterpiece has released an official description of Maigret Season 2, which reads as follows: “In the second installment of the MASTERPIECE Mystery! Series, Chief Inspector Maigret (Benjamin Wainwright) and his team of detectives investigate a series of haunting and complex crimes. Based on adaptations of three of Simenon’s most famous Maigret novels – The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien, The Yellow Dog, and Maigret’s Revolver – Season 2 dramatically raises the stakes for Maigret and his wife Louise (Stephanie Martini).” Additional Maigret cast members include Rob Kazinsky as Inspector Justin Crave, Blake Harrison as Sergeant Joseph Torrence, Kerrie Hayes as Sergeant Andrea Lucas, and Shaniqua Okwok as Detective Berthe Janvier. The show holds a perfect 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
