A new forecast map from AccuWeather shows Canadian wildfire smoke continuing to spread across large parts of the Midwest and Northeast into August, raising concerns about air quality and public health for millions of Americans.
According to AccuWeather, prevailing weather patterns are expected to keep directing smoke from active wildfires in western Ontario into the United States, with periodic episodes of haze and unhealthy air likely to persist in the coming weeks.
Where Are the Wildfires Burning?
Canada remains in the grip of a significant wildfire season.
The Canadian Wildland Fire Information System reported that, as of July 22, 2026, 900 active wildfires were burning across the country, while nearly 3,950 fires have burned over 3.3 million hectares so far this year.
Parts of Western Ontario have emerged as one of the biggest sources of the wildfire smoke affecting the United States in recent days.
Ontario Forest Fires posted that as of July 21, there are “139 active fires in the Northwest Region. Of those fires, 45 are not under control, 5 are being held, 8 are under control, and 81 are being observed.”
Many of the blazes are burning in remote and difficult-to-access regions, making direct firefighting efforts challenging. In such areas, firefighters often rely on favorable weather conditions and rainfall to help slow or extinguish the fires.
However, drought conditions and lightning strikes continue to fuel new fire activity across parts of Canada.
AccuWeather’s forecast indicates that smoke is likely to affect states from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast, with conditions varying from day to day depending on local wind patterns and atmospheric conditions.
Why the Smoke May Linger Into August
Meteorologists say the jet stream is largely causing smoke to linger. “The main driver of smoke from their origin points in western Ontario to the Midwest and Northeast is due to the prevailing jet stream dip in the eastern part of North America,” AccuWeather reported.
The pattern allows northwesterly winds to repeatedly transport smoke southeastward across the border.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Reneé Duff said meaningful rainfall capable of extinguishing or significantly reducing the fires remains limited.
“Some sporadic rain is in the forecast for western Ontario, which is the prime source of wildfire smoke entering the U.S. in recent weeks,” Duff said, adding that much of the expected precipitation would likely provide only limited relief.
The forecast warns that the overall smoke pattern could continue well into August unless widespread rainfall reaches the affected fire zones, with AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz saying that lasting relief may not arrive “until the colder weather season, when larger storms bringing rain and snow typically arrive,” which isn’t likely to be until late August into the Fall.
Short-Term Health Concerns as Air Quality Deteriorates
Public health experts have repeatedly warned that wildfire smoke can pose serious health risks, particularly when smoke remains close to the ground.
Smoke pollution has triggered air quality alerts across multiple states in recent weeks, increasing risks to both respiratory and cardiovascular health. Fine particulate matter—also called PM2.5—which is found in wildfire smoke, can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, increasing risks for both respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos, a volunteer medical spokesperson for the American Lung Association, previously told Newsweek that coughing is often the body’s response to polluted air.
“A cough is the body’s way of saying, ‘hey, you’re breathing in something we don’t really agree with,'” he said.
According to the American Lung Association’s 2025 State of the Air report, nearly half of Americans live in counties where levels of fine-particle pollution, ozone pollution, or both are high enough to earn failing air-quality grades, highlighting the widespread impact of poor air quality on public health.
Health officials have advised people in affected areas to watch for symptoms including:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
Children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions are generally considered the most vulnerable when it comes to smoke exposure.
What About The Long-Term Health Effects of Poor Air Quality?
The long-term health impacts of poor air quality can be severe.
A 2026 study published in Science Advances estimated that exposure to wildfire-smoke PM2.5 contributed to approximately 24,100 deaths annually across the United States between 2006 and 2020.
Another study led by Stanford University and published in 2025 estimated that wildfire smoke exposure contributed to roughly 41,380 excess deaths annually in the U.S. between 2011 and 2020. The researchers projected smoke-related deaths could increase by more than 70 percent by 2050, with associated economic damages potentially reaching $608 billion per year.
As the wildfire season continues, forecasters warn that millions of Americans may face recurring bouts of smoky skies and degraded air quality for several more weeks unless weather conditions change dramatically.
