The Cosby Show star Malcolm-Jamal Warner‘s mother, Pamela Warner, just shared a heartbreaking tribute to her son one year after his death.
On July 20, 2025, the former child actor — who played Theo Huxtable in the sitcom — died at 54 by accidental drowning during a family vacation in Costa Rica.
One year later, Pamela shared a statement and photos of Malcolm-Jamal on a tribute Instagram account. “Today has come so very quickly,” she began. “It is amazing how a year of pain, hurt, loss, emotional de-stabilization, and most importantly growth, has come and sits here before me.”
Additionally, Pamela said she was a “firm believer that everything has a purpose and a reason,” while also lamenting, “How can I be here and my child is not?”
The bereaved mother continued, “I was chosen and blessed to be the mother [of] a child who embodied brilliance, creativity, intelligence, empathy, a love for his people, confidence, and belief that we can all be ‘better us’s,’ as Malcom would say.” She also described Malcolm-Jamal as having had a “heart of gold.”
In her tribute, Pamela revealed that she and her son “had healing conversations a few weeks before” his death.
She explained, “We did not know that these were really good-bye conversations. There was nothing left unsaid between us. There was nothing ‘left on the table.’ And I believe that is why I have been able to be at peace with Malcolm’s transition. I knew beyond a doubt that he loved me and more importantly trusted me. And he knew that I would love him forever and a day.”
After thanking fans for their “love and support,” Pamela offered parting words of advice.
“Please take care of yourselves and those who you love. Let them know that they are loved. Clear up any beef you may have with your loved ones, if possible. Cleanse your spirit of negativity. We all have an expiration date. Don’t leave or let your loved one leave without them knowing that they are loved and treasured. That knowledge and ‘clean plate’ has helped me to survive.”
The Cosby Show aired for eight seasons from 1984 to 1992. In addition to Warner, the sitcom starred Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, Raven-Symoné, Tempestt Bledsoe, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Sabrina Le Beauf, Lisa Bonet, and Geoffrey Owens, among others.
