Linux gaming used to mean fighting your desktop, and X11 holdouts are quietly running out of excuses

Wayland for gamers finally makes sense

When it came to comparing X11 and Wayland compositors for a Linux gaming box, over the last decade there was a pretty obvious winner. X11 was the home for anyone who wanted a relatively seamless gaming experience, and Wayland just lacked the core features that baseline functionality that X11 had out of the box, like VRR and working Nvidia drivers. The sentiment was crystal clear: avoid Wayland if you want gaming-related functionality.

With the strides that Wayland has taken in the last couple of years, that advice has hit its best-before date. It's not expired in the sense that X11 is broken, because it still works perfectly fine for many gamers, but the issues that plagued Wayland are largely gone. You no longer have to go to war with your desktop to get gaming workloads to work, and that makes Wayland a much more palatable option across the board.

The Wayland defects that justified X11 were real

But they've been fixed

Much of what plagued Wayland came from the Nvidia driver stack, and it was largely on Nvidia to make a fix. NVIDIA's driver never properly implemented implicit synchronization, and XWayland application on Nvidia hardware would rapidly alternate between two frames, creating a very obvious flickering effect that make Wayland not worth using for Green Team gamers, and convinced an entire cohort of Windows refugees that Linux gaming itself was a broken mess. Once Nvidia shipped support, XWayland adopted it, and that era came to a close.

Variable refresh rate support is a point where Wayland hasn't just successfully played catch-up, but they're actually ahead. Under X11, connecting a second monitor to the same X display breaks G-Sync and FreeSync on your primary, which is a limitation that has no fix because it's structural. On Wayland, that problem doesn't exist at all. NVIDIA shipped VRR under Wayland starting with driver 525 for Volta cards and newer, with forced V-Sync issues cleaned up in a future driver revision. If you run a high-refresh display next to anything else, X11 asks you to choose and Wayland doesn't.

HDR is another win for Wayland, but with less nuance. X11 has no answer at all and isn't getting one. Plasma has had a working HDR path with compositor-side tone mapping since 6.2, and 6.7 added simultaneous HDR and ICC profile support. GNOME 50 brought HDR into screen sharing along with a new SDR-native color mode and wp-color-management v2. Mixed refresh rates and fractional scaling fall out of the same architecture, which is an X11 compromise and a Wayland non-issue.

The desktops have decided and Wayland has won

GNOME and KDE have spoken

GNOME 50 shipped in March with the X11 backend removed. Not behind a toggle or a command, but removed completely. It's the desktop in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Fedora 44, which means the majority of new mainstream Linux installs no longer have an X11 session to log into. Plasma 6.7, out in June, is the last KDE release that ships one; Plasma 6.8 arrives around October without it, and KDE will support the 6.7 X11 session into early 2027. COSMIC never had X11 to begin with.

The number KDE published alongside that decision is worth mentioning, because it's fascinating. Over ninety-five percent of Plasma 6.6 users are already on Wayland by KDE's own telemetry. Count the users still sitting on Plasma 5.27, and the figure drops to roughly seventy-six percent. KDE volunteered that caveat themselves, which is more than most vendors do with a stat that flattering.

None of this means X11 is holding anything back, but it does mean that the developers that are responsible for fixing your gaming bug are going to stop looking at X11 entirely—if they haven't already.

X11 holdouts still have some merit

It's running thin, but they still have a legitimate argument

Remote desktop is the strongest surviving objection to Wayland and it isn't particularly close. XRDP's Wayland support is basically nonexistant, NoMachine and VNC assume an X11 desktop underneath, and SSH X forwarding is a workflow that Wayland has no equivalent for by design. GNOME 50 added a headless session service specifically because this is a live problem people keep hitting.

Automation is the other big hole, as xdotool, wmctrl, and AutoKey depend on X11's open input model. Wayland has answers, but they're per-compositor and less mature overall. And, the fact that KDE shipped opt-in X11 global shortcut compatibility is an admission that the gap is still very real.

None of those matter for gaming

For plug-and-play Linux gaming, those gaps don't matter

The things that are on that list have almost nothing to do with gaming. If you're a productivity-minded gamer, it can make some sense to stay on X11 for those reasons. The closest thing to a genuine gaming objection is game capture, and it has mostly been solved. When something on OBS does misbehave on Wayland it's usually because a tool hasn't adopted PipeWire portals, not because the capability is actually missing.

Gaming on Linux has serious polish, and Wayland is the new default

X11 will undoubtedly live on well past this recent drop in popularity, and if it works for your setup, it's worth keeping around. But for new users looking to get a plug-and-play Linux gaming experience, Wayland has taken over as the option with the most polish. Besides some productivity-specific gaps, it's caught up and even surpassed X11 in many of the ways it used to struggle.
