Last year, Lenovo’s 13th-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon earned a full five-star rating alongside its slam-dunk Editors’ Choice award, and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition (starts at $2,139; $2,374 as tested) is, in some ways, an even better laptop. In addition to an updated Intel “Panther Lake” Core Ultra Series 3 processor, Lenovo introduces “Space Frame” here, an internal redesign that makes interior access and repairability far easier than traditional laptop layouts. This update is a big win for IT managers and end users, though you’ll still need some know-how to replace parts. The laptop we loved before is now faster and more user-friendly, but new challengers have also appeared in this category, which knocks down the five-star rating the Gen 13 model earned to 4.5 stars this time. While we vigorously recommend the new X1 Carbon for its Editors' Choice award, models like the pricier Asus ExpertBook Ultra (our review is imminent) are also worthy of consideration among work laptops for well-endowed IT departments.

Configurations: Intel Panther Lake Hits the X1 Carbon

The X1 Carbon is Lenovo’s super-premium business-laptop option, so brace yourself for the fact that all configurations are pricey. One of the main upgrades this time around (though not the only generational improvement) is Intel’s Panther Lake processors, available in all Gen 14 models.

With that, the starting model costs $2,139 for an Intel Core Ultra 5 335 vPro processor, 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X memory running at 8,533 megatransfers per second (MT/s), a 256GB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 SSD, and a 1,920-by-1,200-pixel IPS display. (Windows 11 Home is the default on the base model; upgrading to Windows 11 Pro costs $40 more.) It’s a little pricey, but given the current market, it’s a fair list price and not a giant increase over the 13th Gen model’s $1,999 starting price at the time of that review.

Lenovo sells a range of configuration options from there, as well as pre-configured models you can order as-is. My review model is a moderately scaled-up configuration with a Core Ultra 7 355 CPU, 32GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an upgraded 2,880-by-1,800-resolution OLED display, and Windows 11 Pro for $2,374. Not every worker needs a huge drive, but I will say a 512GB SSD feels small for a laptop this expensive. (Current component pricing plays a part here, no doubt.)

The Core Ultra Series 3 Panther Lake platform is Intel’s latest in the Core Ultra line, not to be confused with the low-power Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” processors. All Panther Lake processors are fast and efficient, but some key differences between chips pop up in the stack. The platform’s standout feature is the potent Arc B390 integrated graphics, but it’s present only in some of the Panther Lake processors. None of the X1 Carbon’s processor options include a chip with the Arc B390, since more powerful graphics are not generally the purview of a business laptop.

Design: 'Space Frame' Reimagines Laptop Internals

As ever, the X1 Carbon is Lenovo’s sleekest, most premium ThinkPad. It’s compact, thin, and surprisingly lightweight for a fully loaded business system. It measures 0.65 by 12.3 by 8.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.2 pounds, a lightness that I can feel immediately when lifting the system. It feels even airier than it looks, making for a fantastic companion for walking around the office, commuting, or working in public.

The Carbon name comes from its signature carbon-fiber chassis, which keeps weight down and feels high-end to the touch. This is a meticulously built system that’s portable and light but still comes off high-end. It looks the part as a business laptop, but it stands out once you spend a few minutes with it. Given the lighter material, you'll feel a little flex on parts of the chassis if you specifically apply pressure, but nothing that stands out in normal use. It is still MIL-STD 810H rated for durability despite the airy chassis.

However, it’s not all about the luxe materials and portability here. As we first previewed at CES 2026, Lenovo’s new “Space Frame” design debuts with the X1 Carbon. This redesign creates more interior space for improved thermal performance and, more important, enables user repairability at a level not seen in ultraportable ThinkPads before. 

The Space Frame design revolves around a two-sided plate under the keyboard. Lenovo mounted some key components on either side of this frame (such as the motherboard), rather than mounting parts only on the mainboard itself, the traditional approach. The frame makes space (get it?) for a new layout, reducing the internal circuit board footprint by 20%, according to Lenovo, and freeing up room for modular parts and improved thermal performance.

The internal redesign goes hand-in-hand with a more easily accessible interior overall. Just removing the four bottom-panel screws provides access to the interior, and the battery is removable with a few more screws. Generally, all parts are easier to access once the bottom panel is off, and it takes just a handful of screws to get through the bottom panel all the way to the keyboard, if desired.

With the additional space and reimagined frame design, Lenovo also introduced modular parts. The speakers, battery, I/O port headers, and cooling fans are screwed down to the plate as individually removable parts, so you can fix or replace a single problem component. Since the keyboard is not bolted to the rest of the components or the palm rest, it's also easily removable. What was previously a long process has been reduced to just a few minutes, and you no longer need to scrap or replace a full laptop for a minor issue. It should also reduce service downtime.

This idea takes more than a page out of Framework’s book, the upstart PC maker that goes all-in on modular parts and laptop design. I’m in favor of Lenovo’s system, regardless of how much inspiration was drawn from Framework, since it benefits many and encourages the concept. Everything inside the X1 Carbon isn’t as clearly labeled or discrete as the Framework Laptop’s QR-code-bearing parts. To an extent, it may still look like the inside of a normal laptop to a layperson, and you’ll likely want some guidance to know what you’re getting into if you attempt a repair or upgrade. It lacks the Framework’s exterior-removable ports, too; everything swappable here is inside the laptop. Remember to have your screwdriver on hand, since you’ll find no magic latch or magnetic parts system in place.

The X1 Carbon is still far more repairable than traditional laptops, though. It’s a win for both sustainability and for office workers or IT managers since it’s easier to manage. Sure, the average employee is unlikely to pop this open themselves and know what the parts are and how to remove them. However, if you are a savvy individual user or an IT worker responsible for repairs, the act of doing so is much easier. Lenovo pointed us to the repair experts at iFixit, as well, who gave the new X1 Carbon a 9 out of 10 repairability score

The redesigned interior also comes with a larger fan—a full 70% increase over the prior generation. It should help with cooling in this compact chassis, particularly with the processor upgrade in tow. The larger fan allows the laptop to maintain up to 30W of power draw during demanding workloads.

Display, Inputs, and Ports: An OLED Screen Option and Pro-Grade Connectivity

As mentioned, you’ll notice a couple of different screen options available for the Carbon. I can’t speak to the base IPS screen, but the 120Hz OLED panel on my unit is fantastic. The 1800p resolution looks sharp, and as usual with OLED, the color vibrancy stands out. Colors pop on the screen, and the thin bezels on a compact laptop make it look that much better. It’s sweet to have on a business laptop; even if you’re not doing color-intensive professional work, it’s just pleasant to look at. The previous edition also included an OLED option, so this is not a new feature, but I’d recommend it just the same.

The keyboard may be easily removable, but it’s no less pleasing to use. The keys deliver the ThinkPad-trademark satisfying feedback and feel, and it’s a pleasure to type on. As with the last model, it’s not quite as high-quality as the larger ThinkPad systems—the thinner laptop design means a shallower typing experience—but it’s still superior to most laptop keyboards.

Lenovo’s touchpad is also smooth and responsive, with dedicated mechanical left, middle, and right clicks above the touch surface if that’s your preference. You can also buy a haptic touchpad option, which is also larger, thanks to the added interior space, but I did not test this version. If you’re a fan of the classic TrackPoint nub, it remains nestled in the keyboard for a touchpad alternative. You can double-tap the TrackPoint to pull up a quick menu with microphone, voice to text, and other settings, too, which is pretty useful.

The ports—stationary as they are compared with the Framework—provide helpful versatility. The left side holds two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support, an HDMI output, and an audio jack. The right side is home to one more USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port and a 5Gbps USB Type-A port.

Additional connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, with an option for Snapdragon 4G or 5G support. The webcam is a full HD 5MP camera with IR support, and it delivers a sharp, clear picture quality that will improve your presentation in video conferencing. Overall, this is a top connectivity loadout for business laptops with fast wired and wireless connections, and it should deliver everything mobile professional users need. The only miss here is an SD or microSD card slot, which isn’t essential for most professionals, but some of you may prefer one.

One last aspect of the feature set: the “Aura Edition” name. Aura Edition refers to a suite of AI and software features introduced alongside the first wave of AI-ready processors.

The Core Ultra series remains AI-capable with its onboard NPU, enabling the Aura suite: Smart Care, Smart Share, and Smart Modes. Smart Care provides real-time support from Lenovo technicians (via live chat and other assistance), while Smart Share enables connections between your PC and other devices (including tap-to-launch and tap-to-pair smartphone features). The Smart Modes feature includes presets (such as Working, Gaming, and Meeting) that automatically adjust system settings to your current workflow. None of this suite is essential, but it adds some welcome usability to the device.

Performance Testing: A Modest Panther Lake Power-Up

To gauge the impact of the Panther Lake upgrade, I put the new X1 Carbon through our usual benchmark suite. I’ll compare the results against those of the following laptops...

The group consists of other premium business systems, including the previous generation X1 Carbon ($1,999 as tested). The $3,599.99 Asus ExpertBook Ultra is not only a premium alternative but also represents a Panther Lake chip with the Arc B390 IGP. I also compared it against the Microsoft Surface Laptop for Business ($2,499.99 as tested), and our larger, $4,296 HP EliteBook 8 G1a 16 review configuration and its Ryzen processor.

Productivity and Content Creation Tests

Our primary overall benchmark, UL's PCMark 10, puts a system through its paces in productivity apps ranging from web browsing to word processing and spreadsheet work. Its Full System Drive subtest measures a PC's storage throughput. 

Three more tests we rely on are CPU-centric or processor-intensive: Maxon's Cinebench 2024 uses that company's Cinema 4D engine to render a complex scene; Primate Labs' Geekbench 6.3 Pro simulates popular apps ranging from PDF rendering and speech recognition to machine learning; and we see how long it takes the video transcoder HandBrake 1.8 to convert a 12-minute clip from 4K to 1080p resolution. Finally, workstation maker Puget Systems' PugetBench for Creators rates a PC's image-editing prowess through a variety of automated operations in the seminal photo editor Adobe Photoshop 25.

First, I’ll note that the X1 Carbon Gen 14 posted noticeable generational improvement over the X1 Carbon Gen 13 in most tests. It didn’t post a sizable lead in every instance (PCMark 10 and the single-core tests were close), but the multi-core and HandBrake tests stood farther ahead. Such is the mixed improvement of Panther Lake over Lunar Lake.

Compared with the other laptops, though, the new X1 Carbon looked just decent. The X7 chip in the ExpertBook was comfortably faster, as was the Ryzen AI Pro 350 inside the EliteBook (a larger laptop, too, it should be noted). The new ThinkPad’s scores were still solid, though, with a high enough baseline for its intended use cases. So, this year's ThinkPad X1 won’t be the fastest option, if that gives you pause, but it’s also plenty quick for most digital professionals.

Graphics Tests

We challenge all systems’ graphics with a quintet of animations or gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark test suite. The first two, Wild Life (1440p) and Wild Life Extreme (4K), use the Vulkan graphics API to measure GPU speeds. The next pair, Steel Nomad's regular and Light subtests, focuses on APIs more commonly used for game development to assess gaming geometry and particle effects. Last up, we turn to 3DMark Solar Bay to measure ray-tracing performance.

The X7 Panther Lake chip in the ExpertBook Ultra stood above the rest, thanks to its Arc B390 graphics. This was a demonstration of what I outlined earlier: Even though the chip in the X1 Carbon Gen 14 is also a Panther Lake processor, its lack of the souped-up Arc B390 graphics silicon means it delivers the traditionally basic integrated-graphics performance. 

The other systems, similarly, couldn’t hang with the ExpertBook on these tests. (Some of the scores were close, but the biggest gaps were in the most demanding tests, such as Steel Nomad and Solar Bay.) Interestingly, the new X1 Carbon did not consistently post better numbers than the previous X1 Carbon and its older chip, trailing it in a few spots. You won’t find much of an upgrade without the Arc B390, as stated. Regardless, if you know you have a graphics, editing, or 3D-intensive workload, consider at least a chip with an Arc B390, if not a laptop with a discrete GPU.

Battery Life and Display Tests

We test each laptop's battery life by playing a locally stored 720p video file (the open-source Blender movie Tears of Steel) with display brightness at 50% and audio volume at 100%. We make sure the battery is fully charged before the test, with Wi-Fi and keyboard backlighting turned off.

To gauge display performance, we use a Datacolor SpyderX Elite monitor calibration sensor and its software to measure a laptop screen's color saturation—what percentage of the sRGB, Adobe RGB, and DCI-P3 color gamuts or palettes the display can show—and its 50% and peak brightness in nits (candelas per square meter).

You can see that all of these laptops were long-lasting, but the X1 Carbon Gen 14 stood out even among this stacked field. Reaching 25 hours of battery life doesn’t set records anymore, but it’s still plenty for getting through the workday. An uptime that long off the charger also supports the laptop’s portable design.

The screen posted wide color coverage (as broad as, if not better than, most of the others), and it’s on the brighter side at maximum brightness. The screen’s mid-level brightness appeared a bit dim, which we confirmed in testing, so you’ll probably use it near maximum level much of the time. That also likely contributed to the longer battery life, given our 50% brightness test setting.
