Earlier today, King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the first RHS Sandringham Flower Show, held at the royal family’s private home at Sandringham Estate. While the Sandringham Flower Show happens annually, 2026 marks the first year it is being run by the Royal Horticultural Society. King Charles, an avid gardener, is patron of the organization.
During their outing, the King and Queen met with members of the public. “I’m the same age as you,” one person told him. “You are looking good!” King Charles replied, laughing, “It gets much harder doesn’t it?” While King Charles celebrated his birthday publicly at Trooping the Colour last month, he turns 78 in November. Queen Camilla turned 79 earlier this week.
King Charles’s comments on his age are notable in the absence of any updates on his health. Two and a half years ago, in February 2024, the King disclosed he had been diagnosed with cancer. At the time, Buckingham Palace said they would not be sharing what type of cancer Charles has, only specifying it was not prostate cancer. (His cancer was found during treatment for a benign prostate enlargement.)
He last shared an update on his health over six months ago, in December 2025, in a personal video message delivered in support of campaign Stand Up To Cancer. “I know from my own experience that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming,” the King said. “Yet I also know that early detection is the key that can transform treatment journeys, giving invaluable time to medical teams—and, to their patients, the precious gift of hope.”
King Charles also said that his cancer treatment was being “reduced” in 2026, though did not specify what type of treatment he has been receiving. Last year, when he met with cancer patients in during a visit to Ulster University in Northern Ireland, he asked those who were undergoing treatment if they were managing to “survive the side effects alright,” saying, “You just have to push on, don’t you.”
