Karolina Muchova won an absolutely epic Wimbledon semifinal thriller against Coco Gauff and became the oldest first-time finalist at The Championships in 28 years.
After dominating the first set but seeing her level drop in the second, the 10th-seeded Czech showed great mental strength in the deciding super tie-break, saving a match point to complete a 6-2 1-6 7-6 (10) victory in two hours and 35 minutes.
By outlasting Gauff, Muchova reached her second Grand Slam final just a month before her 30th birthday. And by making her maiden Wimbledon final at 29 years and 312 days old, the Czech became the oldest first-time finalist at The All England Club since Nathalie Tauziat, who was 30 years and 249 days old when she reached her first final at The Championships in 1998.
A shaking Muchova was lost for words after booking a Wimbledon final ticket
"First of all, it sounds really nice to be in the final. It was such a big fight. It was a rollercoaster. You’re up and down. In 10 seconds you have a match point and you’re a match point down. No time to think. But very nerve-wracking," the 29-year-old said during her on-court interview.
"I don’t know. I don’t even know what I’m saying. I’m really kind of shaking and trying to sink it in. The atmosphere is indescribable. Thank you to everyone who came and supported us.”
Muchova now one win away from becoming a Grand Slam champion
If you recall, Muchova made her maiden Grand Slam final at the 2023 French Open. That year, the Czech competed extremely well against Iga Swiatek and even led 4-3 in the deciding set before the Pole earned a tight 6-2 5-7 6-4 win.
Now, three years later, the 29-year-old will have a chance to get her hands on a Major trophy when she faces fellow compatriot Linda Noskova in the Wimbledon final.
It is worth noting that earlier this year, Muchova won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Doha.
