Jonathan Cain thought he had a message for Bruce Springsteen — but the internet had one for him instead.
After the Journey keyboardist called “The Boss” an “annoying, bitter old man” for bringing political commentary to his concerts, fans quickly fired back with jokes, criticism, and plenty of defenses of the rock legend.
During a recent podcast appearance, Cain argued that musicians should keep politics out of their performances, saying artists should focus on uniting audiences rather than “lecturing” them. He specifically criticized Springsteen’s remarks about President Donald Trump during his concerts, while praising his own approach of keeping Journey’s music separate from politics.
“I’m a diehard conservative… And guys like Bruce Springsteen should shut up. You know, really, honestly, shut up, Bruce, you know?" Cain said on The Complete Disaster Network. "Him and who’s the other one? Robert DeNiro. I mean, who cares, guys?… Do your art. I try to keep politics out of my music.”
Cain added, “You were born in the USA, weren’t you, dude? So act like it… But even that song, if you look at the lyrics, I mean, it’s a kind of a diss to our country.”
Springsteen hasn't commented, but many fans pushed back, pointing out that Springsteen has spent decades weaving social and political issues into his music — and questioning why Cain’s comments sparked such a strong reaction.
Quite a few joked, "You lost me at Journey keyboardist" and "Notice how they have to tell you who Jonathan Cain is in the headline while the singer who quit his band over 40 years ago needs no such introduction."
Another person wrote that, "Jonathan Cain is just mad that he got a cease and desist from his own band for an unauthorized performances of 'Don’t stop believing' at a Trump event. He also got kicked off the bands credit card for spending too much money on luxury flights. Statements from him are further from a flex than anything Springsteen has said."
