Intel Corp. INTC reports second-quarter earnings this week with investors looking for signs that its turnaround is gaining traction. But just days before the results, the company added a fresh wrinkle to that narrative.

Intel is planning another round of layoffs within its Data Center Group as part of what it called a “broader strategy” to become a more focused and efficient company. The timing is notable. After one of the market’s biggest comeback rallies this year, Intel is no longer being judged solely on whether its recovery is real—it is being judged on how much work remains.

Another Restructuring Before Earnings

Intel confirmed the organizational changes after CNBC reported the planned layoffs, saying the move is intended to ensure the business has “the right roles and skills in place to better serve the needs of our customers and strengthen our execution.”

For investors, however, the announcement raises a bigger question.

The Data Center Group sits at the center of Intel’s AI ambitions, competing against Nvidia Corp. NVDA, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD and an increasingly crowded market of custom AI silicon providers. Cutting jobs inside one of its most strategically important businesses could be viewed in two ways: as another step toward building a leaner company, or as a sign that Intel’s turnaround still depends heavily on aggressive cost reductions.

That makes management’s commentary during Thursdays earnings call arguably more important than the quarterly numbers themselves.

The Conversation Has Moved Beyond PCs

Not long ago, Intel’s earnings were dominated by questions about the PC market.

Today, investors are far more interested in whether CEO Lip-Bu Tan can accelerate Intel’s AI strategy, attract more foundry customers and improve profitability without slowing product innovation. Updates on AI demand, foundry momentum, capital spending and additional restructuring efforts are likely to receive just as much attention as revenue and earnings per share.

The company has spent much of 2026 rebuilding credibility through sweeping operational changes and renewed focus on execution. Those efforts have helped fuel a sharp rally in Intel shares, but they have also raised expectations heading into earnings.

Why This Earnings Call Matters

The layoffs change the lens through which investors may view Intel’s results.

A strong quarter alone may not be enough to satisfy Wall Street if management suggests more restructuring lies ahead. Conversely, if executives can frame the latest workforce reductions as the final stages of a broader transformation while reinforcing confidence in Intel’s AI and foundry roadmap, the company could strengthen the case that its turnaround is entering a more durable phase.

For investors, that’s likely to be the most important takeaway from Intel’s earnings—not whether the company beat estimates, but whether the turnaround story is finally beginning to shift from restructuring to growth.
