I truly think that one of the greatest inventions of the last 100 years is the McDonald’s Egg McMuffin. It set the standard for fast-food breakfast options, and I’ve been enjoying them throughout my entire life. In fact, my dad bought an egg ring so he could start making a copycat version at home to save money. Rumor has it that this might be part of what won over my mom when they were dating. And who could blame her?
But even the classics need a little innovation now and again. I was really pleased with the Hot Honey Sausage Egg Biscuit the brand debuted earlier this year. And the collab with KPop Demon Hunters brought us the Sausage McMuffin with Egg, complete with a Spicy Saja Sauce. It’s a genius move, really, to keep the lineup the same and swap out seasonally-available sauces.
So naturally, when I heard about the Honey Brown Butter Biscuit, I did what any sane person would do: I drove to my nearest McDonald’s location. After trying this latest version, let’s just say I have some notes.
What is McDonald’s Honey Brown Butter Biscuit?
It’s the classic bacon-egg-cheese construction, plus a buttermilk biscuit and a honey brown butter sauce. I absolutely adore pairing savory and sweet flavors together for breakfast, like dipping bacon into maple syrup or following Michael B. Jordan’s lead and putting strawberry jam on my McMuffin.
So I was utterly disappointed when this sandwich somehow fell flat. The honey just tastes like honey, and I got none of the caramel flavor of brown butter. Overall, the sandwich ate pretty dry, which might have been improved upon with more sauce. I didn’t have this issue with the Hot Honey Sausage Biscuit, so I’m not sure what happened with this version.
I think that this might have landed if it were marketed as a Honey BEC Biscuit. In my ideal world, the biscuit itself would be made with brown butter and slathered with honey butter—that would be the breakfast biscuit of my dreams. So while the honey brown butter sauce was a letdown compared to the Hot Honey and Spicy Saja sauces, I’m still glad I tried it. I’ll take any excuse to start my day with McDonald’s breakfast.
When is the McDonald’s Honey Brown Butter Biscuit available?
The Honey Brown Butter Biscuit is available now for a limited time at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide. It sounds like this won’t be sticking around for a very long time, so if you’re curious to test the sauce yourself, I would grab one sooner rather than later. But if you’re not the biggest fan of a sweet-and-savory mashup, this one might be the one to skip.
