Your USB-C cable is probably overkill.

It’s easy to fall for USB-C cable marketing. Higher wattage always sounds nice, especially when your devices support fast charging. But those 100W or 240W USB-C cables don’t do any good if the devices you’re charging max out at 45W. I learned this the hard way after spending more than I needed to on cables that did exactly the same job as cheaper, lower-wattage options.

USB-C cable wattage is simpler than it seems

The right cable depends on what you’re charging

A 100W cable for a phone charger sounds great, but it’s often overkill. USB-C cables have a wattage ceiling, which is the maximum power they can carry. Below that ceiling, the charger and device negotiate the actual delivery through the USB power delivery protocol. A 65W cable won’t push 65W into a phone that tops out at 45W.

That means the only thing that matters is if your cable’s ceiling is at or above what your device actually demands. For most phones — even flagships — you’re mostly looking at 45W or 65 W. A 100W cable or 240W cable won’t charge the phone any faster than a 60W cable would. It’d just cost more and do the same job.

For instance, I have a Galaxy S26, which tops out at 25W. That means any USB-C cable rated at 25W or above will max out the charging speed. A 60W cable also works, and so does a 100W one. But the thing is, they'll all do the same job as a basic 25W cable, at least with my S26.

A high-wattage cable only pays off if you need the flexibility

The case for an overspec cable

The only time you need a higher wattage USB-C cable than what your phone supports is if you’re going to use it across multiple devices. Smaller devices like earbuds and smartwatches aren’t a concern here because most of them top out at 5W or 10W, which means any USB-C cable will do.

But if you’re going to charge a Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra (45W) or OnePlus Pad (67W), you’ll want a cable that can keep up. The same goes for handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck or ROG Ally, which sit around 45 to 65W. Laptops are where the numbers can jump even higher. Ultrabooks typically need 45W to 65W, while more powerful machines demand 100W to 140W or more.

In these cases, using an underspecced USB-C cable will throttle charging speeds. So if you want to use the same cable to charge both your phone and a laptop, go higher. Otherwise, matching the cable to your phone’s actual charging wattage is all you really need to do.

There’s more to a good USB-C cable than wattage

Don’t let the wattage distract you from everything else

Matching your device’s wattage with your USB-C cable is a good start, but if you’re going to use the same cable for file transfers too, you have another spec to consider. A 240W cable can be slower at moving files than a cheap 60W one. It all comes down to what USB standard it’s built around.

USB 2.0 tops out at 480Mbps. USB 3.0 gets up to 5Gbps. USB 3.2 can hit up to 20Gbps. The wattage rating on the cable tells you nothing about which of those you’re getting. A USB-C cable may be marketed as a 100W fast charging cable but still only push USB 2.0 speeds. The wattage may be in the front and center of the packaging, but the USB version will be buried in the fine print if it’s mentioned at all. So if you’re buying a cable to pull double duty for charging and file transfers, make sure to check the USB standard too.

There are other things to consider too

Wattage and transfer speeds are two of the most important specs, but not the whole picture. A no-name cable may be capable of delivering 25W, but there’s nothing stopping a manufacturer from printing a higher number on the packaging. What actually tells you the cable will deliver what it promises is the USB-IF certification. Certified cables have been independently tested against the spec they claim to meet. Uncertified ones are usually a gamble, so it’s better to stick to trusted brands like Anker, UGREEN, or Baseus.

Build quality matters too. A thick, braided cable is perfect for all the usual wear and tangling. A cheap one could break, fail, and in the worst case, become a fire hazard. Finally, your charger matters just as much as the cable. A cable rated for 45W paired with a 25W charger will only ever deliver 25W. The whole chain — the device, charger, and the cable — needs to match.
