Could this be Virginia's most beautiful state park?
While the Blue Ridge Mountains tend to steal the spotlight when it comes to outdoor adventures in Virginia, some of the state’s most memorable escapes unfold at a gentler pace in its state parks. At James River State Park, the landscape opens wide rather than rising steeply; rolling fields, quiet forests, and the steady movement of the river shape the more than 1,500 acres.
Here, the James River takes center stage. More than three miles of shoreline invite visitors to launch a kayak into calm waters, cast a line at sunrise, or simply watch the current drift by from the riverbank. The park’s easy access to the water provides ample opportunities for nature lovers to enjoy both land and water activities.
But it’s what happens after sunset that sets this place apart. Far from city lights, it was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2019, offering a rare kind of after-dark stillness you can’t find in many areas of the state.
Planning Your Visit
Summer is peak season for James River State Park, thanks to long, sunny days and warm temperatures that make it ideal for a wide range of river activities.
Park entry is $5. If the contact station is staffed, you can pay on site with cash, check, or credit card. If it’s unstaffed, use the self-pay envelope and follow the instructions provided.
How to Get There
James River State Park sits in Buckingham County near Gladstone, Virginia. Its convenient location makes it easy to reach from several Virginia cities: just two hours from Richmond or Roanoke, an hour and a half from Charlottesville, and 50 minutes from Lynchburg.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the park is during the summer months, when warm weather and higher water temperatures create a lively, energetic atmosphere. Weekends tend to be the busiest, so if your schedule allows, plan a midweek trip to enjoy fewer crowds on the river, trails, campgrounds, and picnic areas.
If weekends are your only option, consider reserving campsites or picnic shelters in advance and aim to arrive early or late in the evening, as midday is typically when the park is most crowded.
Best Things to Do
Paddling
One of my favorite things to do, both growing up and as an adult, is paddling on the James River with friends. We love launching our kayaks and spending the day exploring the river and its surroundings.
Hiking
The park has 22 miles of multiuse trails, with one of my favorites being the Tye River Overlook via Cabell Trail. The hike is three miles out-and-back and takes you through a forested area, which leads to terrific views overlooking the river.
John Fury, park manager at James River State Park, agreed, saying, “It offers a great mix of terrain, scenic overlooks, and a chance to experience both forested areas and open views of the river valley. It’s a trail that showcases the diversity of the park.”
Fishing
Fishing is possible from both the river and the shore, with the park known for bass, sunfish, crappie, and more. In addition to the river, there are three freshwater ponds, two of which are available to those who prefer pond fishing. Note a freshwater fishing license is required for casting a line at the state park.
Picnic
The park has an abundance of picnic shelters, perfect for enjoying meals outdoors. They’re also available for rent, so you can easily secure a spot. Three of the six shelters offer electricity and lighting, ideal for grilling dinner or enjoying the sunset in comfort.
Stargaze
In 2019, James River State Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park, a distinction given to places that protect the night sky and limit light pollution. In other words, it’s an exceptional spot for stargazing.
According to John Fury, “James River State Park’s designation as an International Dark Sky Park truly sets it apart—not only within Virginia, but across the region. With minimal light pollution and a strong commitment to preserving natural night skies, visitors are able to experience exceptionally clear views of the stars, planets, and even the Milky Way on the right nights.”
He added, “The best stargazing location in the park is our dark sky viewing area near our amphitheater, which offers wide, open views of the sky. Fall and winter typically provide the clearest conditions due to lower humidity, but summer can also be excellent, especially for viewing the Milky Way. We also host occasional night sky programs to help visitors better experience and understand what they’re seeing.”
Camping
The park has plenty of camping and lodging options, including cabins and lodges for rent, as well as several campgrounds. There are five campgrounds in total, three of which are open year-round. Some sites include RV hookups, while others are better suited for tent camping.
One standout option is Canoe Landing Campground, a tent-only area set right along the river. With scenic views and easy water access, it’s a particularly memorable place to stay.
When asked for top campground options, Fury shared, “Branch Pond Campground stands out for its balance of accessibility and privacy. It offers a more tucked-away feel, while still being close to key amenities, and it provides a great basecamp for both relaxing and exploring the park.”

Must-see Wildlife and Natural Features
The James River is the park’s standout feature, displaying natural beauty and abundant wildlife. Bird-watchers will find plenty to appreciate here, from ducks and geese to woodpeckers and more.
“The park is incredibly diverse in both wildlife and landscapes. Visitors frequently spot white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of bird species, including bald eagles, along the James River,” said Fury.
“One of the most unique features is the Tye River confluence, where it meets the James. This area creates a dynamic ecosystem that supports a wide range of plant and animal life. The park’s rolling fields, hardwood forests, and river frontage make it a great place to experience Virginia’s natural beauty in one location.”
