You've got water, essential oils, and vodka, right? That's basically all you need for a heavenly little spritz bottle of DIY linen spray for fabrics or the air that'll last you months, or to give as a gift. Here's how to make it.
What Is DIY Linen Spray, and Why Use It?
Linen spray is a liquid solution you can spray in the air or directly onto fabrics like sheets or upholstery to keep them fresh and add scent, typically using essential oils. You can buy it in-store or make it yourself!
Why Use Vodka in DIY Linen Spray?
Since oil and water don't mix, vodka is there to help disperse the essential oils. It also helps the scent last longer in the air. If you don't want to include vodka, you can substitute it for more distilled water or a hydrosol like rosewater. (I don't recommend using rubbing alcohol!).
How to Make Easy DIY Linen Spray (Step-by-Step)
What You'll Need
- 1 1/2 ounces water (preferably distilled)
- 1 1/2 ounces plain vodka
- 30 drops of essential oil (lavender, citrus, eucalyptus, etc.)
- Small glass spray bottle (ideally dark in color)
- Measuring cup
- Funnel (optional)
Instructions
- Combine water and vodka: Measure out the water and vodka and pour both into the small spray bottle. Use a dark glass bottle if possible to preserve the essential oils. (A funnel will make your life so much easier here.)
2. Add essential oil: Add 30 or so drops of your favorite essential oils directly to the spray bottle. Lavender is commonly used on linens because of its soothing, relaxing scent, but opt for your favorite, whether it's grapefruit or tea tree (more ideas below!).
3. Shake the bottle: Replace the cap and give the bottle a good shake to disperse the essential oils. Shake the bottle again before each use, then lightly mist sheets or spray into the air. It's always nice to label it, too!

Try another calming blend
Here are a few more blends that not only smell great, but will also help bring on the calm: 30 drops of chamomile; 15 drops of lavender and 15 drops of bergamot; 18 drops of grapefruit, 6 drops of jasmine, and 6 drops of ylang ylang.
Beware of staining
Be careful to only use lightly colored oils. For example, rose essential oil smells lovely, but has an amber color that can stain. If you're not sure what color the oil is, pour a few drops into a glass first.
