There’s no set timing to know when an HVAC has hit its expiration date.
A 9-year-old system may be worth replacing if it keeps breaking down or costs a fortune to repair. That said, a 15-year-old system might still be worth keeping if it’s well maintained.
Joey Dooley, a general manager at American Residential Services (ARS) in Texas, a national residential HVAC and home services company, says homeowners should look at the bigger picture.
“In some cases, an eight- or nine-year-old system makes sense to replace,” he says. “In other cases, you may have a system that’s 15 years old that still makes sense to keep. We really want to do that analysis and let the homeowner know what the true cost of ownership has been so they can make a decision.”
Here’s how to think about HVAC age, repair costs and whether your system is too old to keep fixing.
Age is important but is not everythingAs mentioned above, age can make older systems inefficient, but it’s just one part of the decision.
You also have to look at:
- How often it breaks down
- How expensive the repair is
- Whether it is still under warranty
- How well it controls temperature and humidity
- Whether your energy bills are rising
- Whether parts or refrigerant are becoming harder to source
- Whether the system was installed properly
- Whether the ductwork is helping or hurting performance
An older system that has been maintained well may still have life left. A newer system with bad installation, poor airflow or repeated failures may not.
Use the half-cost rule as a starting pointAccording to ARS, if a repair quote is more than half the cost of a new system and the unit is over a decade old, replacement usually makes more financial sense over the life of the system.
It’s not a perfect rule, but it gives you a useful starting point in deciding what’s right for your home.
For example, if a new system would cost around $14,000 and the repair is $7,500, that repair may be hard to justify if the system is already past its prime.
But if the repair is a few hundred dollars and the system has been reliable, repairing it may still make sense.
Think in cost per year of lifeThis is simple math, but it’s an easy way to weigh your options.

For example, if your repair costs around $1,000 and gives you about five more years of relative use, give or take, your cost per year is just $200.
That said, if you have to repair a bigger part and it costs you $2,000, and your AC has already been breaking down often, replacement may be a smarter use of your money — as there’s no guarantee whether the same issue will arrive next year.
If you have called a technician multiple times in one season, replaced the same part more than once or keep dealing with weak airflow, poor cooling, strange noises or humidity problems, your system may be costing you more than it is worth.
This is not an exact formula, because no one can guarantee how long an older system will last. But it can help you avoid making the decision based only on the sticker price of the repair.
Replacement costs are high, so compare carefullyHVAC replacement is expensive, which is why the decision should not be rushed.
According to ARS, a complete residential HVAC system replacement typically ranges from about $12,000 to $16,000, depending on system type, home size and installation requirements. ARS notes that simpler furnace-only replacements run lower, while premium or high-efficiency systems and complex installs run higher.
A central AC split-system replacement typically ranges from about $13,000 to $16,000, with cost driven by system size, efficiency and install complexity.
ARS reports that a combined gas furnace and AC system typically runs between about $13,000 and $16,000, depending on equipment and home requirements.
A furnace-only replacement typically ranges from about $6,500 to $9,000, depending on furnace type, size and efficiency.
Those numbers are why repair can feel tempting, even when the system is older. But if you are repairing the same system over and over, the total cost can quickly add up.
Humidity problems can make an old system feel even olderNot every system needs to fully break down to know that it’s deteriorating over time.
The very first sign is comfort. If your home feels damp, sticky or unevenly cooled, the issue may be bigger than the thermostat setting.
“Air conditioning is dehumidification with a byproduct of cooling,” says Gregory Milich, an HVAC expert and college instructor with 43 years of experience. “So air conditioning is basically dehumidifying the air.”
If your system is oversized, undersized or poorly installed, it may not be removing enough humidity, and your home can feel uncomfortable, even if the thermostat says the temperature is normal.
Milich also warns that humidity can affect the home itself.
“It doesn’t just have to do with cooling,” he says. “It’s the humidity that will hurt — not hurt you, but hurt your belongings in your house. Humidity soaks into everything.”
If you are paying for repairs and still dealing with humidity problems, that should be part of the cost-per-year calculation.
Ductwork can change the mathDuctwork can easily make even a new system underperform.
“A lot of the real problems come from ductwork,” Dooley says. “If the ducts are installed improperly, if there are restrictions, if things are sealed badly, then you’re not getting the efficiency you paid for. For example, we can change to higher-efficiency equipment, but if the airflow and duct system aren’t right, you’re not going to get that full efficiency.”
According to ARS service data, ductwork repair or replacement typically runs between about $2,800 and $4,000 per job, depending on the extent of work and home layout.
Don’t automatically blame the unit. Check to make sure your ductwork is not leaking or restricted, as replacing the unit might not solve the problem.
Refrigerant can make older AC repairs more expensiveIf your older AC uses R-410A refrigerant, the repair-vs.-replace math may change over the next few years.
According to ARS, the refrigerant transition that began in 2025 is expected to push repair and replacement costs on older R-410A systems higher over the next several years as supply tightens.
This does not mean that every R-410A system needs to be completely replaced, but if you have a system that is leaking or freezing up or needs refrigerant-related repairs, it might make sense to replace — especially if the costs are adding up.
A system can age faster if it was not installed correctly.“An HVAC system is not complete until it’s installed correctly,” says Scott Urquhart, an HVAC sales and customer experience expert. “Whether it’s the greatest equipment with the greatest warranty in the world, or it’s the cheapest equipment you’ve ever found or heard of, you have to install it correctly. And if you don’t, you’re going to have problems.”
Dooley says the same applies to performance.
“I tell people all the time that the equipment can be great, but if the installation is bad, the performance will be bad,” he says.
If your system has been struggling since installation, the problem may not be age alone. It could be the sizing, ductwork, wiring or even the installation quality. A technician can help diagnose whether you need a replacement or repair.
The system still needs to be the right sizeIf you do replace an aging HVAC system, do not assume bigger is better.
“First of all, it needs to be sized properly,” Milich says. “You can’t just take a three-ton system out and put a four-ton system in because the customer says, ‘I just want more air conditioning.’ It does not work that way.”
An oversized system can cool too quickly without removing enough humidity. An undersized system may run constantly and still fail to keep up.
Josh Conder, division operations manager for ARS Central Division, says his team performs a full energy analysis and heat-load calculation to determine what works best for each home.
“We go to the home and do a full energy analysis and a heat-load calculation to determine what really works best for their individual situation, as opposed to just throwing out a blanket price and hoping that it works,” Conder says.
That analysis matters because replacing an old system with the wrong new system can create a new set of problems.
Maintenance can help your HVAC last longer“The importance of maintenance may change a little depending on where you are in the U.S., but biannual maintenance is the baseline,” says Dooley. “Almost every manufacturer recommends it, and I can tell you that a lot of them also effectively require maintenance if you want to protect your warranty.”
Maintenance can help catch problems quickly and reduce strain on the system.
How to tell if your HVAC system may be too old to keep repairing
