Honda Prologue latest EV axed in a long, lingering line of them

• Honda is cancelling the Prologue and the Acura ZDX EV.
• Those are just the latest EVs to die in a market shifting to hybrids and ICE.
• Even Tesla dropped the Model S and X.

When Honda acknowledged last week that it was cancelling the Prologue electric SUV, which shared the same Ultium platform, battery, electric motors, and core chassis with the Chevrolet Blazer, that left the fourth-largest automaker in the US without an EV.

Honda was not alone in axing EVs; most carmakers have either eliminated or drastically scaled down electric car sales when presumed demand evaporated along with the $7,500 Federal tax credit.

In addition to the tax credit, you could blame the decline on shifting consumer demand, as well as tariff pressures. Whatever it was, automakers have significantly pulled back on EV offerings in the US, and the Honda Prologue is just the latest example thereof.

Notable cancellations and withdrawals include:

• Honda: The Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX are ending production. The Acura RSX EV and a funky Fortran flagship Afeela sedan were aborted before they hit the market.
• Ford: The F-150 Lightning electric full-sized pickup truck has been retired. Plans for a three-row electric SUV were scrapped. Citing high battery costs and shifting consumer demand, the automaker abandoned the project to focus on hybrid versions of its large SUVs instead.
• Volvo: Scaled back its US lineup and canceled the Volvo EX30 in the US market.
• General Motors: Delayed/canceled planned models like the Buick EV SUV and the all-electric Ram 1500 REV from Stellantis, citing cooling EV consumer demand and strict tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China.
• Polestar: Ceasing selling vehicles in the United States due to federal restrictions on Chinese-linked connected technology.
• Tesla: Discontinued the Model S and Model X.
• Nissan: Nixed the Ariya.
• Volkswagen: Skipped the 2026 model year of the ID. Buzz.
• Genesis: Discontinued plans for an electrified G80 in the US.

As for Honda’s dropping the Prologue and the Acura ZDX, the company said it plans to launch 15 new hybrids by March 2030, primarily in North America, but hasn’t released details. The first of those hybrids are due next year.
