The pitch for the Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund ETF (NYSEARCA:VGT) is almost embarrassingly simple. You buy one ticker, pay 0.09% in fees, and let the largest companies in American technology do the compounding for you.

Over the last decade, that plodding approach turned every dollar into roughly nine, with VGT delivering a 799% total return. That is the sort of quiet arithmetic that actually makes millionaires, and it is why the "boring" label attached to VGT deserves a second look now, in the middle of a semiconductor cycle unlike anything most investors have lived through.

The Fund and Its Return Engine

VGT tracks the MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index, holding over 315 stocks with roughly $146.5 billion in assets. The return engine is capital appreciation from a small group of platform companies that dominate operating systems, cloud, and AI silicon, plus a long tail of smaller software and semiconductor names along for the ride. When those platforms grow earnings, the fund grows. When they stumble, so does the fund. There is no hedge and no overlay.

The macro fuel right now is real. AI chip stocks added a combined $2 trillion in market value in July 2026, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is up more than 47% year-to-date, and Nvidia holds an estimated 70% to 80% share of AI GPUs. An index fund pointed at that build-out captures the compounding without asking you to pick the winner.

Does It Actually Deliver?

Yes, and by more than the marketing suggests. VGT is up 23.4% year-to-date, 36% over the past year, and 134% over five years. The 10-year annualized return sits at 24%. At that pace, a $10,000 initial contribution with steady additions genuinely does compound into seven-figure territory over a working lifetime, which is the "millionaire" math the title promises.

The comparison that matters is against the broad market. VGT has beaten peers over the last decade because it strips out the retail, media, and consumer names that dilute broader benchmarks. You are paying nine basis points for the purest liquid exposure to US technology available. On cost and execution, Vanguard delivers.

The Concentration Problem, In Real Numbers

Now flip the coin. When your top three holdings account for roughly 40% of the portfolio, a wobble in one name becomes a wobble in the fund. In June 2026, Nvidia alone shed $588 billion in market cap on concerns about the sustainability of AI capital spending. VGT is down 3% over the past month because of it. Morningstar's 2026 outlook notes that the top 10 US stocks now account for over one-third of the market, up from 18% a decade ago, so even "diversified" index investors already own this trade. Adding VGT doubles down on it.

Two more tradeoffs worth naming. First, no sector diversification, which means every 2000-style tech drawdown lands squarely on this ticker. Second, the 8-for-1 forward split effective April 21, 2026 lowered the per-share price without changing the underlying value. A share near $116 represents the same fund, sliced thinner.

Who Should Actually Own This

VGT fits investors who already accept that the next decade of equity returns will be driven disproportionately by American tech platforms and who have 15-plus years before they need the money.

Sizing matters. A 10% to 20% sleeve alongside a broad-market core lets you harvest the compounding without betting the retirement on one AI capex cycle. Anyone who cannot watch this fund fall 30% in a bad quarter without selling may want to reconsider position size, or lean on a broader index fund and skip timing the semiconductor cycle. The millionaire path is real. It just runs through some genuinely uncomfortable months.

Jeff Bezos says Amazon stock plunged from $113 to $6 — founders should build a ‘heavy company’ and stay optimistic ‘almost to the point of delusion’

A collapsing stock price can make it look like a company is falling apart. Amazon AMZN founder Jeff Bezos says that’s exactly when founders need to pay the least attention to the market—and the most attention to the business they’re building. Speaking at Italian Tech Week 2025, Bezos reflected on the dot-com crash, when Amazon’s stock plunged from $113 per share to $6 per share in just a few months. "Shareholders were upset, employees were...
