The New York Yankees think they're getting value for these players at the 2026 trade deadline? Ha.

The Yankees' trade dealings in the offseason and the deadline are fairly expansive, but they feature a very similar theme with Brian Cashman's strategies. And when the national audience catches wind of anything ridiculous that surrounds the Yankees, they run with it.

Cashman either trades "nothing for nothing" (arguably his most famous trait from 2018 - 2026); trades very little to acquire a player with a lot of money attached to them (Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, Ryan McMahon, etc.); finds a diamond in the rough who has a shelf life of ~2 years (Gio Urshela, Clay Holmes, Jose Trevino); acquires absolute trash (Jake Bird, Scott Effross, Mark Leiter Jr. and many more); or tries to posture himself in rumors with the Yankees' depressed assets.

We're going to discuss the latter for this exercise, as rumors have surfaced that the Yankees will dangle Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez at this year's deadline in an effort to improve the big league roster.

Great timing! Neither have value! But we guess that helps with the Yankees' quest to acquire a bunch of middle relievers to flesh out the bullpen.

Does this situation sound familiar? It's because it is. This has Clint Frazier/Miguel Andújar vibes all over it. It's just more evidence the Yankees refuse to trade prospects/young players at their peak in fear of them succeeding elsewhere. Instead, they wait until the value has plummeted and then pretend as if they're meaningful assets.

Yankees Rumors: Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones being dangled in trade talks

Now, Francys Romero certainly has intel, but he's not Jeff Passan. So we'll take this with a grain of salt for the time being. That said, based on Cashman's track record with these sorts of things, it wouldn't be at all surprising if this was the team's approach.

Cashman famously waited until the bitter end to trade Frazier and Andújar, which became a national joke. Frazier's "lightning fast bat speed" was the selling point, but it had long been a non-factor due to his concussions and terrible defense. Andújar was the runner up to Shohei Ohtani in the 2018 Rookie of the Year race but then never came close to replicating that season after suffering a shoulder injury. Much of the jokes were at the expense of Yankees fans, too, who believed that either player could fetch the Yankees something of value.

We will say, however, Jones and Dominguez are far better than that pair. Both have much more potential and projectability even if they've yet to succeed in pinstripes. Still, though, they aren't going to help elevate the Yankees' roster whether they're here or traded for something else.

In all likelihood, they will be the third piece in much larger deals to get them across the finish line, but neither will be a headliner. The Yankees debuted both for the world to see and they've been underwhelming at best. That's the price you pay when you refuse to sell high ... which reminds us that we could've had Corbin Burnes in 2024 if the Yankees just bit the bullet and moved Jones.
