DANVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Hendricks County 4-H Fair is back this week, bringing livestock shows, free entertainment, a carnival and a few new surprises to the Danville fairgrounds.

The fair is WISH-TV’s next stop for its community series, “WISH You Were Here.” WISH will be live from 3 – 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Melissa Sexton, a board member with the Hendricks County 4-H Fair, said the event offers something for everyone.

"Our county fair is really like a state fair experience," Sexton said. "We’ve got an ag experience, dozens of free entertainment across the grounds, livestock shows, a whole street full of vendors and a carnival that is second to none."

Admission is $5. Children nine and under get in free.

New this year

Among the new additions this year is "First Bite Fishing," a free catch-and-release fishing opportunity open to kids and adults alike.

"A lot of kids maybe don’t have that opportunity to do that," Sexton said.

New entertainment acts include a magician in the carnival, a canine performance and the Cortez Family, an aerialist act.

"You don’t expect that at a county fair," Sexton said. "And of course we have that."

4-H at the heart of it

Hundreds of 4-H members will present projects they have worked on throughout the year, covering everything from indoor projects - including foods, health, communications and gift wrapping - to livestock species including horses, llamas, alpacas, rabbits, poultry, swine, sheep, cattle and goats.

An ag experience area gives younger children the chance to pet baby animals, including baby goats and baby pigs.

Hendricks County 4-H Fair Queen Autumn Chattin said 4-H has been a cornerstone of her life for years.

"I’ve done foods and cats every single year," Chattin said. "It’s the staple of my year."

Last year, Chattin tried the health project category for the first time and won grand champion. She continued with the project this year.

Special days throughout the week

The fair is also marking two special community days this week.

Military and Veterans Appreciation Day - themed "Stars, Stripes and County Fair Nights" - honors active and veteran military members with free admission. Members need only show their ID, and their entire families can attend at no charge. The Indiana American Legion department commander is also scheduled to appear.

"We can’t have a celebration of America’s 250th without honoring our military," Sexton said.

Wednesday is Disability Inclusion Day, coinciding with the WISH-TV live broadcast. The fair will offer special entry and accommodations for individuals and families with special needs.

"We just hope to see everyone at the Hendricks County Fair," Chattin said.

The Hendricks County 4-H Fair runs all week in Danville. Even if you can’t make it out Wednesday for the "WISH You Were Here" broadcast, organizers encourage the community to stop by any day and take in the fair.
