Free-agent superstar LeBron James earned the first two of his four career NBA championship rings while playing for the Miami Heat from 2010-14, and he has been linked with a possible return to the Heat ever since he informed the Los Angeles Lakers in late June that he would not be returning to that organization for the 2026-27 season.
The Heat excited fans late Tuesday night when they posted a link to their YouTube channel titled "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference," followed by the date July 27. However, it now sounds like somebody within the Heat may have gotten a bit too excited too early.
Miami Heat made "mistake" with possible LeBron James return leak
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, a Heat team spokesperson said that the link was posted by "mistake" and that "the club's social media department was preparing for the possibility of James' signing and mistakenly posted the link to the team's YouTube page." That post has since been deleted.
The Heat's "mistake" occurred less than 24 hours after agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports said that James is "not going to be rushed" to announce where he likely will end his Hall of Fame playing career. The Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers are "believed to be the top teams being considered" by James. That said, the ESPN story hinted that the Golden State Warriors aren't entirely out of the running to win the James sweepstakes.
LeBron James has NBA "in a holding pattern"
According to Khobi Price of the California Post, teams and players "throughout the league are in a holding pattern until James makes his decision." For example, Price mentioned that it's unclear if James' next team will want to trade for Lakers guard Bronny James, the 41-year-old's son.
"It isn’t a guarantee that the younger James will follow his dad to his next team," Price wrote. "Bronny is well-liked within the Lakers organization, and he’s a player they’ve developed since drafting him with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 draft. But if LeBron’s next team is willing to send the Lakers a real asset for Bronny, that changes the calculus."
As for the Heat, they officially acquired superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier this summer. Some think Antetokounmpo would be the best player LeBron James has ever had as a teammate.
