Contract talks broke down, and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens entered the 2026 season playing on a one-year, $27.3 million franchise tag.
Pickens made it clear that his focus isn’t on contract negotiations but on helping the Cowboys compete for a Super Bowl. Pickens addressed his contract situation without hesitation on July 18.
“What’s important to me is winning. Like I said from the beginning, I always wanna bring a Super Bowl to a group of guys that never had that feeling. That’s really the most important part to me,” Pickens said, as reported by The Cowboys Network on X.
Pickens has maintained the same message throughout the offseason. Despite entering 2026 without a long-term deal, he has continued to prioritize winning over personal accolades, a stance echoed in the Cowboys’ X post.
After his agent, David Mulugheta, suggested he skip Dallas’ voluntary OTAs, Pickens attended the mandatory minicamp, where he stated he wouldn’t push back the start of training camp, which begins on July 29.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, there were no real problems for Pickens and the Cowboys through the process. The Cowboys made their intentions clear in April.
“We’ve made a decision that we’re going to have George play under the franchise tag, which won’t be a first for us. So, there won’t be negotiations on a long-term deal,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said in April.
Pickens entered the offseason coming off the best year of his career, finishing with 93 catches for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns after totaling 2,841 receiving yards and 12 TDs across his first three seasons in Pittsburgh.
For now, though, Pickens isn’t letting his contract define the season. His priority remains helping Dallas compete for a Super Bowl, believing that team success will naturally take care of his future.

Playing on the franchise tag doesn’t appear to bother Pickens. While Dallas chose not to negotiate a long-term extension before the deadline, the wide receiver has consistently indicated he’s comfortable proving himself on the field before discussing his future.
The fully guaranteed franchise tag gives both Pickens and the Cowboys another season to determine whether they’re the right long-term fit.
Even after that breakout campaign, the Cowboys stuck to their offseason plan of having Pickens play on the franchise tag rather than negotiating a long-term extension.
“Pickens himself has consistently expressed that he’s comfortable playing on the tag and letting his play speak for itself,” per Romell Williams of Athlon Sports, July 18, 2026.
Dallas is set to get another year to assess consistency in HC Brian Schottenheimer’s offense before making a franchise-impact choice on Pickens.
Whether a long-term deal comes from Dallas or elsewhere, Pickens has made it clear that his attention is on winning first. If another standout season follows, the contract conversation can wait until 2027.
