Genesis Built The Full-Size Luxury Wagon Mercedes And BMW Are Too Afraid To Sell

Genesis may be about to steal the march on some big German manufacturers. It's trialing a full-size luxury wagon idea when others see that as a risk.

There Are Only a Handful of Wagons Left on Sale in 2026

We added a section to discuss the current state of the wagon market.

Some German manufacturers treat the idea of a full-size luxury wagon with care. They're not averse to creating luxury wagons in some cases, as Americans can currently buy an E-Class wagon from Mercedes-Benz and an M5 Touring from BMW. Seemingly, neither wants to turn their largest luxury sedans into long-roof flagships.

However, Genesis may be about to catch them on the back foot with its G90 Wingback Concept, which gives the full-size G90 Sedan a sweeping roof, tailgate, and Magma treatment. Granted, it's a concept, but those German OEMs may have some thinking to do if the concept takes flight.

The Germans Protected Their Flagships Until The Flagships Became Predictable

It's important to stress that neither Mercedes-Benz nor BMW are unaware of a wagon’s appeal. For example, there's the 2026 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid wagon, with its practical long-roof body and combined 577 horsepower output. And BMW has an even more practical, powerful vehicle in the shape of its 717-hp M5 Touring. This gives American buyers access to a body style from these two, when many other OEMs consider the format to be extinct.

Both German companies fully understand how a wagon can function as a performance car enthusiast statement and family vehicle at the same time. The issue here is that neither company seems to think that the idea can work at a higher level. This is why both the S-Class and 7 Series remain just four-door sedans, supported by sprawling SUV lineups.

These companies seem to think that buyers who want more cargo capacity can just go for either a BMW X7 or a Mercedes-Benz GLS. On the face of it, that doesn't seem to be too bad an approach. After all, those large SUVs typically fetch substantial prices, match current consumer preferences, and offer three-row versatility.

Neither Mercedes-Benz nor BMW may think that it's worthwhile trying to develop a low-volume flagship wagon model, but while those companies take their own approach, Genesis is exploring its options. The G90 Wingback challenges the expensive SUV logic and asks whether that’s really the only commercially defensible answer. It seems that the company's chief creative officer, Luc Donckerwolke, is not particularly pleased with the industry's "multiplication of SUVs" and thinks that approach could lead to saturation. He wants manufacturers to avoid a “typology monoculture,” to leave room for different body styles and make consumer choices more varied.

Underlying all this potential friction is the fact that Genesis is definitely a challenger brand. Mercedes and BMW could defend their familiar territory and point to all their experience and customer research, but Genesis needs a certain amount of drama to boost its positioning. It's well known – during its relatively limited history – for making people stop to reconsider the established luxury hierarchy. The company may also know that a full-size wagon is unlikely to outsell a flagship SUV, but such a vehicle could yet give Genesis the upper hand when neither Stuttgart nor Munich offers something similar.

A Genuine G90-Sized Wagon And Not Another Mid-Sized Performance Model

Genesis built the Wingback Concept on an unmodified G90 platform that has a 125-inch wheelbase and a 208-inch overall length, making this concept substantially larger than other high-performance wagons. For example, the BMW M5 Touring is 201 inches long with a 118-inch wheelbase, and the Mercedes-AMG E53 hybrid wagon measures 196 inches long and 117 inches between the axles.

Genesis believes that its Wingback has the road presence and passenger-oriented proportions of a chauffeur-class sedan. As it is so big, Genesis can retain proper rear-seat accommodation for executives and offer the flexibility of a tailgate, while in between, there’s a large and more accessible cargo area.

But size alone doesn't make a challenger — the real question is whether Genesis has the mechanical foundation to match the ambition.

From the outside, the Wingback looks like far more than just a straightforward G90 wagon conversion. It has flared wheel arches that can accommodate 22-inch wheels, as well as larger lower intakes, canards, a performance-inspired diffuser, and two rear spoilers. There’s a sharply raked rear window where the trunk gives way to a tailgate. Its long roof certainly makes it look like an unmistakable wagon rather than a conventional fastback.

Genesis Already Has Most Of The Expensive Hardware

There's no word from Genesis currently about the G90 Wingback’s engine, but if it was to use the mechanical foundation from the current production G90, that wouldn't be a bad place to start. The standard 2026 G90 has a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, and an available 48-volt electric supercharger that boosts the output to 409 hp and 405 lb-ft.

Both versions have an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. Buyers will also find multi-chamber air suspension and rear-wheel steering, which indicates the type of chassis hardware that would certainly suit a fast luxury wagon.

The sedan gets to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, but as the production Wingback would likely be heavier, it’s difficult to know how it would perform in the wild. Nevertheless, the existing G90 powertrain shows that Genesis wouldn't have to develop an entirely new engine and drivetrain to make the Wingback a formidable machine.

Much the same is true when it comes to the cabin, with the Concept retaining the G90's basic interior architecture but adding quilted Chamude upholstery, Magma logos, green contrast stitching, and co-ordinating details across the seats, door panels, steering wheel, dashboard, and console. The Wingback would probably adopt power-operated doors, available massaging seats, an eight-inch rear armrest display, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system from the production sedan.

The Wagon Market Is Both The Warning And The Opportunity

When Genesis looked at the potential full-size wagon market, it must have seen some of the warning signs. While BMW has faith in its M5 Touring and Mercedes has the same confidence in the E53 Wagon, the broader market tells a more complicated story. For example,Volvostopped offering both theV60 Cross CountryandV90 Cross Countryin the US, andPorscheopted not to carry thePanamera Sport Turismobody into the current Panamera generation.

The experience of those particular companies may suggest that conventional wagons are still hard to justify at the luxury end when that particular type of buyer seems to favor SUVs. However, Audi has indicated some confidence in this area as it still offers both the A6 Allroad and the 621-hp RS6 Avant Performance, which are distinctive and high-margin products that suggest life beyond luxury crossovers.

But there again, Genesis may well be ready to proceed with a certain amount of caution. It might consider a limited-production G90 Wingback as a Magma model or as part of its One-Of-One bespoke operation. That would enable the company to offer the vehicle at a much higher price due to exclusivity and not have to stock large numbers at dealerships.

It remains to be seen where the MSRP for the Wingback would land. The current G90 starts at $92,700 and the e-supercharged version begins at $103,000. It's likely that the Wingback will be above those sedans, and if so, it could turn into a flagship image builder for the company.

As you just read, the wagon market is on the decline. Buyers are still consistently choosing SUVs and crossovers in favor of the better-looking station wagon style. That said, there are only a handful of wagons left. Of the remaining group, we have already mentioned the BMW M5, the Mercedes-Benz E53 Wagon, the Audi A6 Allroad, and the RS6 Avant. That's it for performance wagons — if the Genesis G90 wagon were to come to fruition, we imagine it would join ranks somewhere between the A6 Allroad and the RS6 Avant, but it most likely won't be a full-blown performance car like the M5.

You may be able to find new examples of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo at dealership lots, but buyers can no longer configure new builds after the brand recently pulled their plugs. Otherwise, wagon buyers are limited to the regular Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain to suit their needs.

We would love to include the Subaru Outback in this section, but its latest iteration changed its design so drastically, we're not sure if we would call it a wagon anymore. The Outback's historical significance with a wagon body led us to mention it, but the 2026 model year brought an SUV-like shape.

Genesis Only Wins If It Actually Builds The Wingback

As of July 2026, the Wingback remains a concept and Genesis has declined to offer a production decision, let alone a timetable. But Genesis is at least judging a flagship wagon against the commercial scale of a flagship SUV, and it may yet decide to go forward with a small run around its One-Of-One customized program.

At the same time, Mercedes and BMW are not putting their faith in full flagship wagons, and this could leave Genesis with a chance to own the category outright. The wagon market in America may be contracting at its conventional end, but up at the top it could be about to grow far more interesting. Genesis may yet create this full-size luxury wagon after Germany’s most established OEMs have long since decided that the risk was too much.
