Heartfelt tributes have been paid to former Clare hurler Anthony ‘Sconey’ Kilmartin, who died following a tragic accident in New York.
The 40-year-old, who had made the city his home for more than 10 years, died after suffering a fall on July 12. News of his passing has devastated both his family and the GAA communities in Ireland and the United States.
Anthony is survived by his parents, Tony and Eileen, his sister Helen, brother David, his partner Karen and a large extended family, all of whom have been left grieving his sudden loss.
A gifted hurler, Anthony enjoyed an outstanding career with Newmarket-on-Fergus, where he progressed through the club’s underage ranks before helping the side to county championship success at senior level. He also represented Clare at a number of grades during his playing days.
Paying tribute, Newmarket-on-Fergus GAA Club described the news of his death as a devastating blow.
The club remembered Anthony not only for his ability on the pitch but for the energy, humour and personality he brought to everyone around him, saying he left a lasting impression on teammates and friends alike.
Members said his move to New York years ago meant the parish lost ‘a hugely positive presence’ whose infectious character was impossible to replace.
As word of his death spread, social media was flooded with messages remembering Anthony as someone who could light up any room.
Friends described him as a talented sportsman, a loyal teammate and someone who was always willing to help others, both on and off the field.
Many recalled growing up alongside him in Clare, sharing memories of hurling and football, while others who knew him in New York spoke of his kindness and generosity towards fellow Irish emigrants.
One mourner said Anthony had welcomed newcomers with open arms and was ‘a gentleman in every sense of the word’, while another said the memories he created with his beloved club would never be forgotten.
His death has left an enormous void for those who knew him, with tributes describing him as a larger-than-life character whose warmth, wit and friendship touched countless lives.
