FSG's stance on selling part of Liverpool to Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos

Liverpool owners FSG is in talks to sell a significant minority stake in the club this summer, with Jeff Bezos potentially part of the consortium eyeing a deal

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) would welcome the opportunity for new investment in Liverpool, after reports claimed that the ownership group was in talks with a consortium over the possible sale of a significant minority stake.

That's according to the Daily Mail, which claims that FSG is looking to position the club for future success with the possibility of investment from outside sources. It's a move that would see the American sports conglomerate divest more of their stakes in the Merseyside outfit, following the sale of a minority stake to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity back in 2023.

A potential full sale of Liverpool has been explored in the past, but FSG's decision to hold discussions over the sale of a minority stake would still see them in charge - even after the sale of their NHL team the Pittsburgh Penguins late last year suggested that other sales could follow.

Reports claim that the current discussions surrounding a stake sale would be worth around 30 per cent of the holdings from FSG, with a price tag on that stake valuing the club at roughly $6 billion.

The sale of that stake would help FSG bank a profit on its investment in Liverpool, while the majority control still allows the owners to retain the club moving forward.

The discussions over that minority stake has been led by Amit Bhatia, a British-Indian businessman and investor who is backed by the Mittal family fortunes - with his father in-law being Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian steel magnate worth billions.

Bhatia and the Mittal family has experience in sports, having spent nearly two decades as co-owners and directors with English Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

With FSG confirming that talks are ongoing with the Bhatia-led consortium, there are discussions within that group with Jeff Bezos to bring him on board.

Bezos, 62, is the founder of Amazon and the fourth-richest man in the world, having gained notoriety for the success of his businesses and investments over the years.

The American entrepreneur is yet to step into the world of sports, despite links to several franchises in the States, but Liverpool could be his first chance to do so.

It's a move that would see the consortium given a clear figurehead for the push to buy the minority stake, while the Reds may benefit from its likely connections with Amazon in the future.

It remains to be seen just how the deal will progress, but with FSG's willingness to divest some of its stake, it's clear that an agreement is possible.

Whether Bezos will join the consortium and seal the move is another thing altogether.
