Former UFC Star Dustin Poirier Loses Major Sponsor After Airport Arrest

His worst day cost him hundreds of thousands.

UFC star Dustin Poirier is still dealing with the fallout from his June arrest at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The incident involved tense confrontations between Poirier and both airline workers and police, leading to a public drunkenness charge. In the days following the arrest, Poirier revealed that he had lost a major sponsorship deal because of his actions.

Poirier said, “One big [sponsor] isn’t a sponsor anymore. I’m sure I’ve lost a few. I’m waiting to see when the smoke clears who’s still with me or not. That day cost me not only embarrassment and embarrassment to my family, but it also cost me a lot of money, too. I’m losing sponsors.”

During an interview with Ariel Helwani on Tuesday, July 21, Poirier opened up about the sponsorship fallout, revealing that Bud Light had terminated their partnership with him in the wake of the incident.

He said, “They terminated my contract immediately. It’s all good, man. I don’t need that poison in my life. It sucks that my family is missing out on the money I had left on the deal with them, which was a few hundred thousand dollars, but also if I’m representing something I’m not gonna be taking part in, promoting stuff, it is what it is.”

Poirier Dealt With Personal Struggles Before His Arrest

Poirier, who was arrested on Father’s Day, opened up about the personal challenges he’d been facing leading up to the arrest. He touched on his father’s long struggle with alcoholism, providing some context for what he was going through at the time.

He revealed, “My father has been in jail plenty of times for alcohol-related stuff. He’s actually homeless right now. Part of that, me getting drunk at the airport — and it’s not my weight to carry — but I tried to help him, and he’s back on the street.”

“On Father’s Day, I was traveling to work, and I just couldn’t stop thinking about my father. I started drinking at the airport, and that’s what led to the incident,” Poirier added.

Moreover, the former interim UFC Lightweight Champion also revealed that he’s been grappling with what to do next in the aftermath of his retirement from fighting. He said, “I was just a kid chasing a dream; it flew by so quickly. I was scared for the future. Twenty years, I was dreaming about being the best.”

“I just want to dream again. I don’t know what that will be. I just need that in my life, whatever that is. I still love it. I know I need to continue walking away from it. Those gloves, you put them on the mat; that’s a piece of myself I left. I truly believe that,” Poirier added.

Poirier mentioned that he has not seen the body camera video taken at the time of the arrest, where he attempted to initiate a fight with an officer, resulting in his arrest. Poirier further explained that the consequences of the encounter continue to unfold and have yet to be realized.
