The meeting took place on Azerbaijani territory without the knowledge of the country’s official authorities.

“Our territory was used for such a meeting without our knowledge,” he said. ”I cannot comment on the details, as we were not present at the meeting. However, the flight data allows me to state that a secret meeting did take place in Baku.”

The talks were held from July 12 to July 14. Aliyev added that if the purpose of the meeting was to look for ways to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, “that can only be welcomed.”

On July 17, the German newspaper Die Zeit reported on the meeting. Germany’s unofficial delegation allegedly included Ronald Pofalla, former chief-of-staff to ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel, and Matthias Platzeck, former head of the state of Brandenburg.

Russia, according to the sources, was represented by Valery Fadeyev, head of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s council on civil society and human rights, and Viktor Zubkov, chairman of Gazprom’s board of directors.

The report also said the German politicians had previously held at least four meetings with Russian representatives, including in Abu Dhabi.
