If former Spartans forward Jaxon Kohler were to get a fifth year of eligibility, it is rumored that he will be playing elsewhere for it.
News broke late last week that Kohler is one of a few college basketball players legally pursuing an injunction that would provide an extra year of eligibility. If passed in the state of California courts, Kohler would get to play another season of college hoops this year.
This news of Kohler pursuing another year at the college level instantly sparked some excitement among many Spartan fans, but it appears that may have been premature. A new rumor from a popular college basketball social media account suggests Kohler would be playing for another school should he get that extra year of eligibility.
According to College Basketball Content, Kohler has been in "heavy contact" with BYU and will "likely transfer there" should he get the injunction for a fifth year. College Basketball Content cited BYU Cougars Wire for this report, which would make a lot of sense given the fact that Kohler is originally from Utah.
Kohler wrapped up his four-year career with the Spartans this past season, averaging 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to help lead Michigan State to the Sweet 16. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but is currently competing with the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League.
If Kohler were to get another season of college hoops, I wouldn't blame him for looking elsewhere to wrap up his career. Sure, it would sting to see him playing in another uniform since he became a true fan favorite over the last four years, but it would also make sense given the current roster structure of the Spartans heading into next season. We will need to continue to monitor his legal injunction to see if he even is given the chance to play again at the college level, and if he does, it seems like odds are it won't be in the Spartans' uniform this year.
