Sen. John Fetterman has joined other Democrats on a bill that would remove cannabis as a federally controlled drug and allow states to create their own laws.
“I’ve always been very pro-weed. In a very libertarian slant: I’m not going to judge anyone for using it to knock the edge off of life,” Fetterman said in a statement.
“I think your path to wellness should be without judgement or punishment — legal, safe and regulated,” he said. “I supported President Biden and President Trump when they took steps on the issue, but it is time for Congress to stop [fooling] around and make weed legal. This bill is a good step forward.”
Among many provisions in the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, it would:
- Establish a Center for Cannabis Products to regulate the industry
- Direct the Food and Drug Administration to create standards for labeling cannabis products
- Remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act and abolish federal bans in states that have legalized marijuana
- Require the U.S. Department of Transportation to create standards for cannabis-impaired driving
- Eliminate tax restrictions on cannabis businesses
- Direct the federal government to back research on the impact of cannabis and establish a Cannabis Justice Office within the U.S. Department of Justice
- Prohibit pre-employment and random marijuana testing for federal workers
Besides Fetterman, 16 other Democratic senators signed onto the bill as sponsors or co-sponsors.
