A man fatally stabbed a woman in her 60s outside a shopping mall on California's Central Coast on Monday in a random act of violence, according to Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan.
The attack occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near the food court parking area at Capitola Mall. Capitola police said man stabbed the woman multiple times. Officers found her on Clares Street across from the Macy's in the mall. She died at the scene despite life-saving measures by first responders.
Police only described the suspect as an adult male, who they found about half a mile away on 41st Avenue. The victim had not been identified as of Tuesday morning.
"Based on the investigation to date, detective believe this was a random act of violence, and there is no indication that the suspect and victim knew one another prior to the attack," Capitola police said in a statement Monday night.
The Capitola Police Department said officers responded at about 12:47 p.m. to reports of a stabbing near the Capitola Mall's food court exit.
The mall was placed on lockdown and evacuated before closing for the rest of the day, although its Target store had reopened by midafternoon.
