Drinking 5 cups of coffee a day is safe and could reduce heart risk: Report

Higher caffeine intake, including levels found in energy drinks, was associated with cardiovascular harm.

(NewsNation) — The latest research suggests consuming up to five cups of coffee a day is safe for most adults and may be linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular conditions.

The American Heart Association put out a scientific statement Monday announcing the latest research indicates consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, the equivalent of five eight-ounce cups of caffeinated coffee, is “generally safe for most adults.”

The statement added research suggests regularly consuming caffeinated coffee without added sugars, flavors or cream was linked to a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, heart failure and some irregular heart rhythms.

Authors of the research cautioned, however, that studying the “effects of caffeine on the cardiovascular system is challenging,” because the cardiovascular benefits observed in recent studies could be related to compounds in coffee other than caffeine.

“Experimental studies suggest that the bioactive compounds in coffee may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help explain some health benefits,” the statement said. “In addition, most studies on caffeine are observational, meaning they cannot prove cause and effect.”

The statement said additional research is needed on coffee and other caffeine-containing products, but noted higher caffeine intake, including levels found in energy drinks, was associated with cardiovascular harm.
