Dow surges 300 points; General Motors posts upbeat earnings

U.S. stocks traded higher this morning, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 300 points on Tuesday. Following the market opening Tuesday, the Dow traded up 0.57% to 52,137.20 while the NASDAQ climbed 0.69% to 25,685.34. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.44% to 7,476.18. U.S. stocks traded higher this morning, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 300 points on Tuesday.

Following the market opening Tuesday, the Dow traded up 0.57% to 52,137.20 while the NASDAQ climbed 0.69% to 25,685.34. The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.44% to 7,476.18.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Information technology shares jumped by 1.2% on Tuesday.

In trading on Tuesday, consumer staples stocks fell by 0.7%.

Top Headline

General Motors GM reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results and raised its FY26 adjusted EPS guidance with its midpoint above estimates.

General Motors reported quarterly earnings of $3.57 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $3.20 per share. The company reported quarterly sales of $48.026 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $47.011 billion.

Equities Trading UP

           

  • Vivakor inc VIVK shares shot up 292% to $6.79. Vivakor expanded recurring crude oil marketing programs to $709 million in annualized commercial activity.
  • Shares of Smart Logistics Global Ltd SLGB got a boost, surging 100% to $1.02.
  • Utz Brands Inc (NYSE:UTZ) shares were also up, gaining 89% to $14.07 after the company announced that Intersnack Group will acquire all Utz Class A common stock for $14.25 per share in cash.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • LI Bang International Corporation Inc (NASDAQ:LBGJ) shares dropped 67% to $0.073.
  • Shares of Zhengye Biotechnology Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:ZYBT) were down 54% to $3.68.
  • QumulusAI Inc QMLS was down, falling 37% to $6.00. The company recently announced the purchase of 1,632 NVIDIA Blackwell B300 GPUs to meet accelerating customer demand for high-performance AI compute.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 2.4% to $85.24 while gold traded up 1.1% at $4,059.50.

Silver traded up 3.1% to $58.845 on Tuesday, while copper rose 2.7% to $6.5105.

Euro zone

European shares were mostly higher today. The eurozone’s STOXX 600 rose 0.1%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index rose 0.4% London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.2%, Germany’s DAX gained 0.1%, while France’s CAC 40 slipped 0.3%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed mixed on Tuesday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 3.26%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index falling 0.04%, China’s Shanghai Composite rising 1.79% and India’s BSE Sensex falling 0.31%.

Economics

U.S. Redbook Index rose by 7.8% year-over-year in the week ending July 18.
